Rumors swirled last week that The Punisher may appear in season 2 of Daredevil. This was an exciting opportunity to bring in a Marvel anti-hero that failed to see any success theatrically. But the character doesn’t come without difficulties to bring to the small screen, because the anti-hero employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his war on crime.
However it looks like Marvel and Daredevil showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez will be up to the task, as it has been confirmed that Punisher will appear in season 2, and that The Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal will play him. More on the story below.
It is not clear if Bernthal will be a series regular or if this will be a recurring role, but THR says that Bernthal will have what is said to be “a big presence on the series.” The announcement on Marvel.com described the character as “a vigilante who aims to clean up New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter how lethal the results.” If the Elektra audition rumors are true, we can also expect to hear news of her casting in the coming weeks.
Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb said this about Bernthal joining the cast of Daredevil:
“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
Tom Hardy had expressed interest in playing the character, but that was before the rumors of the character appearing in series started to emerge. But Bernthal couldn’t be more perfect for the role. Just by the looks of the header photo alone, the actor has got both the physicality and the intensity to be Frank Castle.
Marvel also debuted the title card for season 2 of Daredevil, which may hint at Daredevil and The Punisher brawling at some point during the season.
Charlie Cox will reprise his role at Matt Murdock and the title character, as will Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, and Vincent D’Onofrio.
The actor also confirmed his role on his personal Twitter account:
