20th Century Fox has announced the official title for their upcoming sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. They also did a Q&A session with the cast and crew recently and released some behind the scenes photos from the set of the movie, which show a large vehicle called the Moon Tug and director Roland Emmerich.
A brief video was released to reveal that the title of the follow-up will be Independence Day Resurgence. The Q&A video, set images, and title reveal video can be seen below along with a synopsis, full cast listing, and release date.
SYNOPSIS:
We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
The sequel sees returning stars Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Bill Pullman (Lost Highway, Lake Placid), Judd Hirsch (Taxi, A Beautiful Mind), Vivica A. Fox (Kill Bill, Curb Your Enthusiasm), and Star Trek: The Next Generation star Brent Spiner (the most interesting of the returning stars) joined by newcomers Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, The Expendables 2), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nymphomaniac, The Science of Sleep), Jessie Usher (When the Game Stands Tall, Survivor’s Remorse), Maika Monroe (It Follows, The Guest), and Sela Ward (The Fugitive, The Day After Tomorrow).
The original ’96 movie starred Will Smith, launching him toward becoming the movie megastar that he is today, but a way to bring the actor back for the sequel was never worked out (unless of course he appears in some kind of super secret cameo no one has found out about as of the writing of this post).
Independence Day: Resurgence will be released in theaters on June 24, 2016.
