MTV’s Scream series got off to a pleasant surprise start last week, and now it’s time to see if the show can keep it’s momentum with episode 2, “Hello Emma.” The show started with Lakewood head bitch Nina (Bella Thorne) filming and uploading a video of Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) having a steamy lesbian makeout session in her car in a parking lot. The other girl Rachel, a cutter, isn’t coping well with the social media backlash, and when “Audrey” calls her, it’s a set up for our killer to hang her from her porch and frame it as suicide.

With our kill out of the way, we delve into some of characters this week and the MTV-ness of the show goes a little over the top. I find it intentionally hilarious that the “cool new kid” character Kieran (Amadeus – Yes that’s his real first name – Serafini) looks like he walked off a runaway, and the kids call him “Abercrombie”. Along with him, we have the cheater jock boyfriend Will (Connor Weil), blonde into her teacher Brooke (Carlson Young) and science geek Riley (Brianne Tju). You may as well cut these characters out of any late 90s direct to video horror ripoff. But despite that, it somehow plays well because the show is totally not taking itself seriously. In fact the characters spend more time discussing other popular shows than figuring out who the killer might be. The Walking Dead actually serves as a catalyst for a romantic interlude on the football field!

Since Emma is already the Neve Campbell of the show, we needed a Courtney Cox, and we meet Piper Shaw (Amelia Rose Blaire) who is researching the town’s events for her “Anatomy of a Murder” podcast. The killer is targeting Emma and her family because of their involvement in the town’s violent past; a disfigured boy named Brandon James went crazy and killed a bunch of people 20 years ago. Emma’s mom (Tracy Middendorf) was the object of his affection, and her father survived the massacre.

The social media aspect of a Scream series in 2015 make it highly entertaining and unfortunately realistic. Everyone is always on their phones, and whenever something happens the first thing we do is grab the phone to video and upload… count the likes… see what’s trending… what got shared… etc. My favorite part isn’t even the show, but MTV being so transparent with their social media connections. In the climatic scene of this episode, Emma is home alone and receives a “Scream call”. As she paces around with a baseball bat in hands verbally jabbing with the killer MTV posts on the bottom of the screen, #WhoIsEmmasCaller next to their big logo. C’mon!

If you can get past the cookie cutter characterizations, you may enjoy Scream. If nothing else, it goes by really fast, and will fill a void left by other horror themed shows that are on summer hiatus. My only concern is that there’s a line between being a self-aware self-referential horror series, and an actual parody of one. Scream is towing that line, and has to be careful it doesn’t drift over.

Scream returns next Tuesday night at 10:00pm ET on MTV.
