Ransom Riggs Library of Souls Miss Peregrine Peculiar Children Header

Library of Souls
The Third Novel of Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children
Hardcover | Paperback | Kindle Edition
Written by Ransom Riggs
Quirk Books
Release Date: September 22nd, 2015

When we last left peculiar children (well teenagers), Jacob and Emma, in Hollow City, they were on the brink of death. Jacob, in particular, had a hollow tentacle wrapped around his neck. When all of a sudden, a calm surrounded him and he was able to speak command in hollow-tongue. And the hollow obeyed. Wth?!?!

And that’s where Library of Souls: The Third Novel of Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs begins – the moment Jacob realizes that his gift is not just to sense or see hollows, but to control them.

The review continues below, but also check out the book tour dates and Ransom Riggs video below.

The couple (twinges of romance but a platonic love that does not take away from the adventurous narrative), along with peculiar talking dog Addison, are in pursuit of the kidnapped Ymbrynes, including their precious Miss Peregrine, and their other peculiar friends. That is Addison’s other specialty – his nose can sniff out peculiars. These three chase Caul, whose mission is to control the Library of Souls, long thought of as a myth, but it is real.

Of course, a Riggs staple are the creepy vintage-looking photographs of peculiars, spread throughout the book. They are particularly haunting, especially on page 443 (go look). This is what bridges the gaps of these books between YA and adult literature. The story is simple and complex enough for the enjoyment of young (the brave young) and old alike. I say brave because this fantasy realm dives into horror more often than not. There is quite a bit of violence and hopelessness strewn about.

The theme of familial ties, explores the “what makes a family” question over and over again. Although we know the answer because we know these characters well, it is enjoyable to continue to explore them. Also trippy are the various loops traveled to. Riggs could really write 377 novels about different loops and peculiars, and it would never get stale.

My favorite parts are when Jacob explores his power over the hollows. There’s a slight redemption feel in there that is bittersweet, both for him and for us.

I enjoyed reading this book so much, the cliched, “I couldn’t put it down,” doesn’t suffice. I had to put it down, because… life. But it was one of those books that was so good, I got annoyed when I needed a glass of water or one of my kids wanted a snack, because it ripped me away from my precious story.

I really cannot wait until the first movie is finished.
