It’s Christmas time at the 99, and everybody is getting into the spirit! Their holiday shows (and every show) are always a good time. For Thanksgiving on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, we got Nick Offerman and Terry’s (Terry Crews) baby being born… in a hospital! Trust me. If you haven’t watched that yet, you are missing out. For Christmas… we get one of Jake Peralta’s (Andy Samberg) dreams come true.
Spoilers below.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine 3.10 “Yippie Kayak” recap/review: Terry wants nobody to disturb him and his family during the holidays by calling. His brother-in-law, Zeke, is very judgy.
Holt and Rosa (Andre Braugher and Stephanie Beatriz), aka the best twinsies ever, are polar bear-ing. Amy (Melissa Fumero) wants in, even though she hates the cold. Don’t worry. She goes in when it matters the most.
Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) got Jake a really thoughtful gift (heart attack soda), and there’s more to come. This make Jake realize that he forgot to get Charles a gift, and of course enlists Gina (Chelsea Peretti) to help. Boyle wants to come too. They are really bad at covering their tracks.
If that was the entire show, it would be enough. This is the Seinfeld of police procedurals. They can make comedy out of nothing.
But there is “Yippie Kayak Other Buckets!”
While grabbing that last minute gift, the store is locked down by thieves and hostages are taken. They are in Die Hard!!! Jake is inappropriately excited quite often. They have no weapons. Gina wants to light everyone on fire, and the Vulture (guest star Dean Winters, who is perfect in this role) is in charge of SWAT outside.
Terry is vindicated. He tells off Zeke, and then puts the Vulture in his place. He may have gotten suspended, but that is his family, and Holt is proud of him.
Inside, they get caught, but Jake is able to surrender, so tank top wearing Boyle can save the day, and mess up the catchphrase, which makes it the best Christmas ever.
This episode was so delightful, as per usual. The key is in the pair-ups. Even Hitchcock and Scully got to have moments this episode.
I have not mentioned how much I love Jake and Amy as a couple. Even though she is completely neurotic and work-obsessed, I do think it is adorable that way she gets excited over weird things, and can see why Jake would find it adorable too. The opening scene is sweet, and shows how much they know each other.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns Tuesday, January 5th on FOX.
