If you were too busy watching football or doing other things that kept you away from the internet this weekend, some potentially exciting news for fans of Daredevil, Netflix’s series based on the Marvel comic book character of the same name, and a certain character set to debut in season two of the series was making the rounds.
According to the report, Netflix is developing a standalone series focusing mainly on the character Frank Castle, better known as Punisher, who is set to be played by The Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal. The series would be a Daredevil spinoff, and would be simply titled The Punisher.
The report comes from TVLine, who at the time said that neither Netflix or Marvel commented on the possible spinoff. Since then Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb did touch briefly on the possibility of a Punisher series during the Television Critics Association winter press tour:
“Look, I’m never going to discourage a network from looking at one of our characters and encouraging us to do more. That’s my job, but it’s certainly not how we enter the arena. We go into the arena to tell a story. If we are lucky enough that through the writing, through the direction, through the actor that people want to see more of that person, terrific. That’s certainly not the beginning and the end goal. The beginning goal is always: what is the best 13 episodes of Daredevil season two?”
While The Punisher is no guarantee at the moment, giving this series a greenlight seems like the easiest decision in the world to make. With the success of Daredevil and Jessica Jones—proving that these darker, more mature comic book series can work—and the level of fan excitement at the news that Punisher, perhaps the ultimate dark comic book character anti-hero, would be a part of season two of the former, it really is a no brainer. But it is a business at the end of the day, and waiting to see how everyone reacts to the new season and specifically Bernthal’s work as Punisher before committing fully to the spinoff series makes the most sense.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Punisher being worked into Marvel TV shows, either. There’s a bunch of characters we could still see pop up in the future.
For now fans can anticipate the arrival of Punisher in season two of Daredevil, which will be released on March 18th.
