Last year, Marvel and Netflix announced former Dexter alum Scott Buck would be the Iron Fist showrunner. A few months later Finn Jones was confirmed to play the title role. Jones would be the final hero of the four that was announced way back in 2013.
Now with Daredevil in its second season, Jessica Jones confirmed for its second, Luke Cage getting ready for its first this coming September, Buck will be quite busy working on Iron Fist for an undetermined amount of time and getting ready for a yet-to-be-announced release date.
Here’s how Marvel described Jones’ character, which isn’t too far off the comic book origins or the rumored logline that was released when Buck was announced as showrunner:
“Jones will play Daniel Rand, who returns to New York City after being missing for years. He fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.”
Buck then spoke about the title character and the billionaire who has the power to wield the Iron Fist:
“Danny Rand is a very complicated character. He’s a billionaire New York Buddhist monk martial arts superhero who’s still trying to figure out what exactly that all means. Finn is able to play all these levels in such an honest, revelatory way that as soon as I saw him I knew he was our Danny.”
Executive Producer/Head of Marvel TV, Jeph Loeb then added a few words:
“Finn wonderfully blends confidence with vulnerability, making him the perfect choice as he struggles to find his place in the world. Now that we’ve found our Danny Rand, we’ve completed our principal cast for the upcoming Defenders on Netflix and we are thrilled to continue to show audiences unexplored corners of the Marvel Universe.”
To commemorate Jones’ confirmation, Marvel has also released a teaser image:
Well, we know the answer to that question. But for those who don’t know who Joy Meachum, here’s a brief description. Danny Rand was born in New York City to a wealthy family, but left an orphan after Harold Meachum, his father’s business partner, betrays the Rand family during a journey to visit the mystical city of K’un-L’un. After years of training and obtaining the power of the Iron Fist, Danny returns to seek revenge only to find that Harold can no longer walk. Harold is then killed by a ninja, and his daughter Joy sees Iron Fist next to her father’s corpse and assumes that he is the one who killed him.
There are a number of supporting characters from other Marvel superhero series that could make an appearance or cameo in Iron Fist. Jessica Jones‘ Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss) was a friend to Wendell Rand, who is the father or Danny Rand. Daredevil‘s Madame Gao (Wai Ching Ho), who was in charge of distributing heroin when Kingpin was trying to rebuild Hell’s Kitchen in his image, barred the image of the Steel Serpent, an adversary to Iron Fist. And it seems as though Clarie Temple (Rosario Dawson) has been established as the Nick Fury of Hell’s Kitchen.
The press release did not state when the series would release all 13 episodes. But it is very likely that we could see it in 2017, the earliest.
