Doctor Strange Marvel Studios concept art

The first trailer for Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange will make its exclusive debut tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character, an egotistical surgeon who suffers from a horrible accident and seeks to heal his hands by any means necessary, even if that means using mystic powers.

The film has been described as Marvel Studios’ Fantasia. We’ve recently seen a couple of set photos that have made their way onto the internet of the cast shooting a scene in New York, which was then followed by photos of Cumberbatch visiting a local New York comic book shop. But as we are just hours away from seeing the trailer, Marvel has released the first poster for the film. Check it out below.

Seeing as Doctor Strange completed principal photography just a week ago, it should be interesting to see what the trailer will have. If anything, it will most likely be a nice savory teaser that should hopefully satisfy fans by showing small bits of the concept art we saw at D23 come to life.

The poster is what you would expect to see in the early stages of a film’s marketing campaign. It doesn’t spoil much, and acts as more of an announcement reminding fans that the film is indeed coming. In it, we see Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange standing in the Sanctum Sanctorum, with his back turned towards its viewer and Strange looking towards the iconic pattern design on its window. The Sanctum Sanctorum is a three-story townhouse located at 177A Bleecker Street, “in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village.” It was built upon the site of pagan sacrifices, and before that Native American rituals, and is a focal point for supernatural energies.

As for who stars, the film touts a rather impressive cast, and one that befits a film that would be nominated for an Academy Award, Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer, We Need To Talk About Kevin) plays Strange’s mentor the Ancient One, while Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) is Strange’s former classmate turned villain, Baron Mordo. Rachel McAdams (About Time, Spotlight) is believed to be playing Clea, Doctor Strange’s love interest and niece to the powerful villainous spectre Dormammu – who some believe will be played by Mads Mikkelson (Hannibal, Casino Royale), who was once attached to play a different Marvel villain at one point in time. Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, Steve Jobs) plays Nicodemus West, a long time admirer of Dr. Stephen Strange’s surgical abilities.

Doctor Strange opens in theaters on November 4, 2016.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

“Doctor Strange” follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

“Doctor Strange” is the latest film in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase 3’s goal””over the course of four years and nine films””is to introduce audiences to new heroes and continue the adventures of fan favorites.
