The first official trailer for Assassin’s Creed, the movie based on the hit video game franchise of the same name starring Michael Fassbender, has been released online by 20th Century Fox.
In the movie, much like in the games, Fassbender’s character Callum Lynch re-lives the memories of one of his ancestors, an assassin from 15th century Spain named Aguilar, using a special machine called the Animus from the corporation Abstergo Industries.

Also starring in the movie is Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Michael K. Williams, Ariane Labed, Brian Gleeson, and Callum Turner, and the movie is directed by Justin Kurzel, who recently directed both Fassbender and Cotillard in the latest adaptation of Macbeth.
Here’s an official synopsis:
SYNOPSIS:
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
ASSASSIN’S CREED stars Academy Award® nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave) and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, La Vie en Rose). The film is directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, Macbeth); produced by New Regency, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, DMC Films and Kennedy/Marshall; co-financed by RatPac Entertainment and Alpha Pictures; and distributed by 20th Century Fox . ASSASSIN’S CREED opens in theaters worldwide on December 21st, 2016.
Whether or not the movie will be any good remains to be seen. It looks like it has potential, but video game movies don’t exactly have a good track record. But one thing that clearly was not a good decision was using Kanye f’n West for the trailer music. Ouch. If you go to YouTube you can already find lots and lots of alternate versions of the trailer with different music, some much better and some just as bad or worse. Unfortunately I haven’t found one using this cover of the AC III theme yet, which is a damn shame.
