Michael Keaton Re-Enters Talks To Star In ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Birdman Michael Keaton in talks for Spider-Man

Just a few weeks ago it looked like Sony and director Jon Watts were going to have to find a new actor to play the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Academy Award winner Michael Keaton was the frontrunner for the role, as reports spread about his possible casting. However, the actor seemingly dropped out of the running.

However, it seems as though the thought of being in a Spider-Man movie that is now a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could not escape the actor, as he is now back in talks to star in the same role. There are also reports that there will be more than just one villain in the film. Find out more here below.

THR says Keaton has re-entered talks to appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming as the arch-villain. There are rumors that it could be Adrian Toomes, the scientist who built a wing-based flight suit that would help him in pulling off various crimes. Variety’s Justin Kroll says that before the falling out, Sony had met with a True Detective star about the role. Though he didn’t name anyone specifically, many believe that the studio spoke with Woody Harrelson. But that’s just speculation.

But the rumors do not stop there. According to JoBlo, the Vulture could be aided by the Tinkerer, a lesser-known villain of Spider-Man’s rogue gallery. Just as the name suggests, The Tinkerer was a scientist/mechanic who would often build technological robots or applications that would assist criminals.

So to ensure that there is webbing that connects Spider-Man to the MCU, Toomes and the Tinkerer would use Chutari technology that was left behind in the aftermath of the invasion of New York in The Avengers to help build the flight suit. This is actually a pretty clever way to tie everything in together, and something that had been explored in Marvel One-Shots. So it should be interesting to see how others implement the alien technology for their nefarious deeds.

In addition, it appears that Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) involvement is more than just a cameo. JoBlo says that he will help make a few modifications to the current Spidey suit by adding webwings to help him in his fight against The Vulture.

But before we get all excited about the news, we have to remember that this is just a rumor. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but JoBlo has a pretty decent track record when it comes to these rumors.

Ever since Marvel and Sony inked the deal to share the webslinger, Spider-Man has been looking better and better. This is in part to Marvel being creative producers in the reboot. Homecoming will not be an origins story for the character; instead, the film will make references to what made Peter Parker into “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.” Tom Holland got unanimous praise for his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. A performance that was so captivating it made everyone excited and hopeful for his solo adventures.

Marisa Tomei will return as Aunt May, and she will be joined by Zendeya and Tony Revolori. Written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters on July 7, 2017.
