Finding the right person to play Han Solo wasn’t easy, but directors Phil Lord and Chris Millerfound their smuggler in Hail, Caesar! star Alden Ehrenreich. The film won’t be released until 2018, but we are slowly learning more about it. In recent weeks, rumors like Solo appearing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story have been shot down, but there has also been confirmation that Chewbacca would appear.
Now there is word that another legendary Star Wars character will make an appearance in Solo’s solo film. According to a new report Lando Calrissian will be part of the film, and it’s who might be playing him that has many of us interested. The Martian and Community star Donald Glover is being eyed to play him. More on the story below.
The Wrap was the first to break the news that Calrissian would be in the film. But it is not clear how much of a role he will have in the film. The two hinted that they have had a storied relationship in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and it is possible that they could explore how they first met or their relationship in the upcoming film.
Moving on to Glover, Birth.Movies.Death said they’ve been hearing rumblings that the actor is in the mix, but it is possible that it could be nothing more than that since they aren’t even sure if an offer is out there.
Lando was first introduced to the Star Wars universe in The Empire Strikes Back, where he was the Baron Administrator who gave refuge to Solo and Princess Leia, both of whom were trying to hide from a pursuing Empire. However, Lando double crosses the group and puts Solo in frozen carbonite. But when the deal he made with Darth Vader is further altered. Because the deal kept “getting worse all the time,” Lando pulls yet another double cross to help the Rebels. He would have a much larger role with the group in Return of the Jedi when he participates in the mission to rescue Solo and piloting the Millennium Falcon during the Battle of Endor.
Like Solo, Lando was a smooth talking smuggler who had no trouble using his charm to get whatever he wanted. He’s most recognized for his dashing looks and blue cape. In the film, Solo described him as having been a scoundrel.
Glover seems like a solid choice. He has proven that he can be charming, funny, and dramatic, so it is easy to see him play the iconic role. However, as BMD said, there is a chance that he could say no. We will keep you posted on the casting progress.
