James Wan Says Aquaman Is The Wolverine Of The DCEU

Things may not be looking good for the DCEU right now, but the future does look bright thanks to the studio making the necessary adjustments to steering the ship in the right direction. The studio brought in promising filmmakers to direct the respective films, and hiring Geoff Johns and Jon Berg was an excellent decision that will hopefully better guide products like Wonder Woman and Aquaman.

One of those promising filmmakers actually has proven himself to the studio with a couple of hit films. James Wan has given Warner Bros. one hit after another with his great horror flicks, and after proving himself able to direct a film with a larger budget – and under terrible circumstances – it only seemed right that he be rewarded for his efforts with a superhero tentpole.

Aquaman isn’t quite ready to hit theaters just yet, but we will get a better introduction of him in Justice League. Now, Wan is raising expectations of the character pretty high with comments like “he’s kind of the Wolverine in some respect.” More on the story below.

Speaking to IGN, Wan couldn’t spill too much about the film, but did offer some light details about the character, including who he thinks Aquaman’s Marvel counterpart could be, how DC’s water hero will communicate underwater, and what it will be like to expand on the character beyond what we’ve seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and beyond what will be in the Justice League film.

I actually think it’s a brilliant move on Zack and co. to cast someone like Jason. Immediately, the whole joke aspect of Aquaman goes out the window. You have such a muscular, superhero-y character and one that is almost, to me, in some ways”¦ I look at him, he’s kind of the Wolverine in some respect. He’s the outsider who gets pulled into this world and he kind of doesn’t want to belong and he was doing his own thing. And he prided freedom above everything else. That kind of plays nicely into who his character is. He’s like a reluctant superhero, right? He’s the reluctant king, basically, or would-be king.
I love the idea of underwater speaking but with a real sort of sonic, aquatic quality to it. So there’s this sort of aquatic, almost sonar/whale thing. Even though it’s in a human language, there’s this slight sort of underlay to it, this ping to it, which I think would be interesting for us to design from a sound design perspective. Yeah, it will be fun. Also, Zack has some ideas that he’ll be doing in Justice League.

Listen, I’ll be honest, in some ways, JL will be an experiment for me to see what works and what may not work as well. And then kind of go, okay”¦ Here’s the great thing, with all these superhero movies, you watch from one movie to another, and they always sort of slightly change things along the way. You kind of have to do that to make what’s best for your film.

Wan added that he really loves what Johns did with the character.

Listen, I’ll be honest, I really love what Geoff Johns did with it. I really think he took this character that had become the joke of the superhero world and made him frickin’ cool again. And I really admire it and that is my leaping off point.

However, the director was unable to confirm previous reports that Black Manta would be the villain of the standalone film.

Aquaman opens in theaters July 27th, 2018.
