Back in 2011 it was reported that a reboot of Starship Troopers was in the works from Sony Pictures and producer Neal H. Moritz, with Thor and X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz attached.

That attempt at the reboot didn’t work out, but the project is not dead yet. It’s being reported that Moritz now has the movie set up at the Sony-owned Columbia Pictures with a pair of new writers, Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, now set to pen the script.

Shannon and Swift started out writing Freddy vs. Jason back in 2003, then the Friday the 13th remake in 2009. And that was it. Until recently when they became very busy, scoring gigs writing the new Baywatch movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Alexandra Daddario, and Zac Efron; Disney’s live-action Aladdin prequel, Genie; Power and Glory based on the Howard Chaykin graphic novel; and an untitled Bermuda Triangle movie.

Starship Troopers is a 1959 novel from author Robert A. Heinlein. In 1997, the book was adapted into a movie by RoboCop and Basic Instinct director Paul Verhoeven. Today the movie has a faithful fan following despite not faring well at the box office when initially released, but it changed a lot from the source material. The reboot is aiming to go back to Heinlein’s book for a new adaptation instead of remaking Verhoeven’s movie. In fact, no one involved with the ’97 adaptation is involved in this new take.

Moritz has 100 producer credits to his name, the biggest of them being the Fast and Furious franchise. Also producing is Toby Jaffe (The Quick and the Dead, Blue Streak), who has worked with Moritz in the past on another title Verhoeven is familiar with, a remake of his 1990 sci-fi hit Total Recall.

The ’97 movie adaptation of Starship Troopers starred Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, and Neil Patrick Harris.
