Comic books and actioners aren’t the only films that are subject to a remake. Proving once again that no film is safe from that terrible six-letter word, sports film are also open to being remade. This is nothing new really, it’s just very rare to see the films from that genre get a new vision.

Now it is being reported that there will be a new version of the sports comedy classic White Men Can’t Jump from Black-ish creator Kenya Barris. More on the story below.

The news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter who says Barris will be teaming with NBA player Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers and Ryan Kalil of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers to develop a remake of the movie. This is all part of a deal that Barris signed with Fox in September 2016.

For those who are not old enough to remember the original, White Men Can’t Jump centered on Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson) a street basketball player who hustles players who assume he cannot play because he is white. He lives with his girlfriend Gloria (Rosie Perez), who dreams of competing on the trivia game show Jeopardy one day. While Hoyle makes his living through hustling, there is one player he’s never been able to beat, Sidney Dean (Wesley Snipes), an arrogant street baller who wants to take his family out of the rough neighborhood. The two decide that they should put their talents together and hustle other players for money.

On one hand, it looks like another cash grab considering that that’s what most remakes are. On the other hand, the project has potential since it is in the right hands. Barris’s Black-ish has been acknowledged with nominations and awards from the Golden Globes to the Emmys. And while it is a sharp and witty comedy, it is also bold enough to tackle issues that affect us socially like guns and most recently Donald Trump winning the US presidency. So say what you will about a remake no one is asking for, if we are to get a new White Men Can’t Jump, just be glad it is coming from the people who know sports and can write great material.

Griffin and Kalil will also produce via their Mortal Media productions banner. But a White Men Can’t Jump reboot isn’t the only film on their slate. They will also be working on new version of The Rocketeer.
