David Ayer Admits He Should Have Done ‘Suicide Squad’ Differently

Suicide Squad star Jared Leto

Suicide Squad may not be the most popular film amongst critics and some fans, but it was one of the top-grossing films of last year. Warner Bros. third entry of the DC Extended Universe was polarizing in more ways than one. The loyal fanbase supported the film even though critics eviscerated it for having too many plotholes and a lack of character motivation. But if there is one thing that Suicide Squad suffered from the most, it’s the fact that the marketing campaign failed to deliver its promise on giving us the Joker (Jared Leto). Sure the Clown Price of Crime was in the film, but trailers and TV spots had assured us he would be a vital plot point. Instead, he was an unnecessary factor. Even Leto voiced his displeasure saying that he shot enough footage for a Joker movie. The extended edition supports that fact.

The cast and director David Ayer had no problem supporting Suicide Squad in the hours following the release of reviews, all of them coming to the conclusion that they made the film for the fans. But a recent response to a fan tweet revealed that Ayer wished he had done some things differently. Mainly, he wished he had made The Joker the main villain.

A fan tweeted out that Suicide Squad was a masterpiece, and that no one else should tell him otherwise. That’s really high praise, and it’s something that caught Ayer’s attention. So much so that he admits that he would have done things a bit differently. Here’s the tweet:

Just in case you can’t see it, Ayer’s tweeted out a image of a note he wrote, thanking him for being a fan, but he recognizes that the film has flaws. But it is what he said at the end that is most revealing of his experience.

“Wish I had a time machine. I’d make the Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story.”

A bit of a stark difference to what he said in response to critics panning the film.

What that translates into is “I’d prefer to die standing, than to live on my knees.” Of course, given time, opinions and thoughts can change. One has to think what kind of film would we have seen if Warner Bros had not interfered with the filmmaking process. That being said, Ayer still embraces the film as it taught him to “take the good and the bad and learn from it.”

But Suicide Squad with Joker as the main villain, which was one of the rumors early on, would have been very different. Leto’s performance as The Joker has its fans and its critics, but I for one cannot really determine if it was good or bad due to the fact that there wasn’t enough of him in the film to begin with.

Ayer even jokes that “there isn’t a secret edit of the film with a bunch of Joker scenes hidden in a salt mine somewhere.”

If anything, should a Suicide Squad 2 happen, we probably can expect to see more Joker. Hopefully.
