First, it was Legion. Now it’s The Gifted. Just as Marvel has expanded their little movie universe by taking a step into TV, so has FOX with their X-Men properties. Though these shows then to vary between praises and criticisms, nothing is really going to stop them from being made. So in order to stop from being repetitive, Fox’s The Gifted gets a new angle. A family on the run with their father who used to work for the very people who are chasing them.
While it’s a premise we’ve seen before, the added mix of a child with special powers does provide a new Marvel twist. And that may just be the thing to make this show a hit.
Check out the full trailer below.
The show revolves around a family whose children have mutant powers. The father (Stephen Moyer) and mother (Amy Acker) are now forced to take their children on the run when their son (Percy Hynes White) uses his powers on his relentless bullies. While trying to evade their pursuers, Natalie Alyn Lind’s character will teach her brother how to control his powers, while their parents join an underground network of mutants that will provide protection.
As far as Marvel TV spinoffs go, this one seems to be just another Marvel TV show. While it may not be connected to the MCU, the show does seem to exhibit come connections to its X-Men film universe – though its film history is convoluted and full of holes. That being said, Blink makes her return to the universe. She was first played by Fan Bingbing in X-Men: Days of Future Past. But she will now be played by Jamie Chung on the show. As for other mutants we will see, there’s Thunderbird (Blair Redford), as well as Eclipse (Sean Teale). There’s also a moment in the trailer where a mutant is unsure if the X-Men or the Brotherhood still exist, which may imply that the show is connected somehow. Though those threads have yet to be revealed.
Bryan Singer directed the pilot episode. Matt Nix (Burn Notice) acts as showrunner and executive producer.
