In the past week, we’ve seen a handful of new images of the cast in costume and learned a lot about Star Wars: The Last Jedi. From new characters and locations to motivations and drives, the film is setting itself up to be one of the most exciting of 2017. But as much as we learned about the film this week, there’s more information coming out.
One of the things everyone is dying to know is the meaning of the title. As Luke Skywalker so ominously put it towards the end of the first trailer, “It’s time to bring the Jedi to an end.” Is he referring to himself, to Rey, or the entire Order? It’s not likely we’ll get answers, but director Rian Johnson and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy can provide vague answers. More on the story below.
The story comes to us courtesy of Vanity Fair. First up, both Johnson and Kennedy being tight-lipped about the meaning of The Last Jedi. Which is not entirely surprising since there’s still seven months left before the film’s release. Ever since the title was revealed, fans have been trying to figure out if Jedi was singular or plural. And although it could go both ways, no one would reveal which one it is. Even so, we probably aren’t going to get the meaning of the title until the very last moment of the film. When trying to pry out if Jedi was singular or plural, Kennedy said:
“That’s actually what’s interesting about the title, and very intentionally ambiguous.”
Johnson has a very different take on it. In fact, in his mind, it’s singular:
“See, that’s the funny thing. I heard that in the foreign translations for the title, they made it plural. In my head, it’s singular. It makes sense with the story, to me, that it’s singular.”
But when asked who specifically is the last Jedi, Johnson gave a very vague response:
“It’s weird because I never even thought of that as the big question. But I love that people are speculating about it, so I don’t want to crush that under my heel… I never thought that everyone was going to be like, ‘Ooh, is it””.'”
Then when he was asked if it was Luke or Rey, the director said:
“I never thought that was going to be the question. I guess partially because of the answer””and this is going to sound like I’m being coy, but I swear I’m not””is, you do have to see the movie. It’s not as simple as saying, ‘It’s this person””ha-ha!’ It is a little more complicated than that. I guess I can say this, that when””no, I’m not going to say anything.”
Obviously no one will spill the beans this early on, especially since we still have seven months of a marketing campaign left to go. That means a few more trailers and maybe even something at the D23 Expo. So it should be interesting to see what’s going to be revealed and if any of our questions will be answered before the film’s release.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees the return of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. They will be joined by Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran, who are all new faces to the franchise.
The film opens in theaters on December 15, 2017.
