Justice League‘s disappointing turn out at the box office last weekend could give way to a huge financial blow to Warner Bros. Normally, a film that grossed $94 million would be a cause for celebration. But when you factor in the cost of production and promotional material, a low $94 million is not even enough to cover a fraction of the overall film. In fact, Justice League is already lined up to becoming the lowest grossing DCEU film since the universe was launched back in 2013.

These low numbers could have a negative impact on the future of the DCEU has a whole. More on the story below.

Forbes is reporting that Justice League is on its way to being an estimated $50-100 million loss for Warner Bros. As the report states, the film cost the studio approximately $300 million to produce, with an added $150 million in marketing. Of course, a $50 million difference is a pretty huge gap, but whether it is a loss of $50 million or $100 million, WB is going to feel the effects of this fallout.

It’s no surprise that Justice League‘s production cost is so high considering what the film had to go through with the rewrites and lengthy reshoots. It seemed like it was at a war with itself, with Zack Snyder‘s voice clashing with Joss Whedon‘s voice, who took over the post-production when Snyder had to take a leave of absence to address a very personal matter.

So what could this mean for future DCEU projects? Don’t expect any current projects to be canceled. Aquaman is already in production, and Wonder Woman 2 is a sure thing considering that the first movie was one of their highest grossing films of the year. However, there were rumors that the studio would not move forward with Flashpoint, Flash’s standalone film. Green Lantern Corps, Cyborg, Gotham City Sirens, Suicide Squad 2, Batgirl and Nightwing are a myriad of other DCEU films which could be in jeopardy. And who knows what is going on with The Batman.

The low numbers will also force studios to look at how they will produce and distribute their superhero films. You can be sure Marvel Studios and to a certain extent Fox will be looking at the future of their superhero properties.

To make matters worse, Justice League‘s box office future doesn’t look good. That’s because it will be going up against the family friendly Coco, which has Pixar’s name on it, plus worldwide critical acclaim. So don’t be surprised to see Justice League‘s box office numbers take a huge hit, again.
