Detective Pikachu

It looks like the world of Pokemon is about to get a major attitude problem now that Ryan Reynolds is in talks to lend his voice to Detective Pikachu, the first ever live-action Pokemon movie.

Yes, the live-action Pokemon movie is still in the works, having just cast two other actors in the past few weeks. But adding Reynolds should prove to be the star power the film needs to draw some major attention. More on the story below.

THR reports that Reynolds would be joining Justice Smith (Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom, The Get Down) and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton. Reynolds would play the electric yellow mouse, who also happens to be a detective. He will help search for Justice’s character’s father, who has mysteriously gone missing.

The film is loosely based on the popular video game that launched in 1996, where players capture a variety of species of Pokemon and then use it to battle in tournaments to earn the title of Pokemon master. In Great Detective Pikachu, players control Tim Goodman as he works together with Detective Pikachu to solve various mysteries. This is accomplished by walking around scenes, finding potential clues, and speaking with people and Pokemon to uncover new information.

The role will be motion capture, so it should be fun to see what the mo-cap suit looks like, and if it will have those pointy ears and thunderbolt tail. But that doesn’t make Reynolds any less of a surprising choice. Some were actually expecting to see Danny DeVito take the role.

The report adds that many of the details about the film are being kept under wraps. So much so Legendary is keeping the film close to the vest.

Goosebumps director Rob Letterman will helm using a draft written by Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy). Universal is handling distribution of the live-action film outside Japan; Toho will handle distribution in Japan. No word yet on when the film could be released.

Smith’s Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom is set to be released in theaters on June 22, 2018, while Reynolds’ Deadpool 2 will be out in theaters on June 1, 2018.
