From the ashes of the old world known as Westworld comes one that is ruled by the hosts. Season 1 of HBO’s Westworld ended with the robotic hosts being freed from the chains of their programming, and upon that freedom came an uprising against the guests who committed every act of violence known to man on them. With the hosts no longer playing victim to these sick games, it was about time that they rise up and took charge. And it is starting to look like that is what they are doing in the newly released trailer for Westworld Season 2 that dropped last night during the Super Bowl. Check it out here below.
The trailer’s dialogue comes from one single person, Delores (Evan Rachel Wood), season one’s main protagonist, who tells us about “this beautiful world,” a world that was built together by the guests and the hosts, a world “where dreams come true.” Basically, we see shots of the beautiful landscape that Westworld has to offer. The characters that we see from Native Americans to colonizers tell us there are plenty of world-building potential and areas for the guests to explore.
She then describes this world as “a world where you can be free.” However, it then takes a dark turn as she reveals that this world is a “lie.” It is that scene where we see incompletely built water buffalo run amuck through the backstage of the Westworld park. Heavily armed security fails to bring them down.
Delores’ voiceover continues, with her saying “This world deserves to die,” we then see a mysterious group of people, all dressed in black – so that could signify something – looking over a ravine that is nearly dried up. Then another shot of security trying to subdue what looks like to be a host. She goes on to say “Because this is your world.” This is probably one of the few shots that we see guests interacting with other guests outside of the park. It’s not clear where they are, but it appears that Logan is shocked to see everyone, except himself, standing motionless.
“We lived by your rules long enough,” it’s there that we see Maeve (Thandie Newton), who is doing that cool slow-motion walk as chaos descends upon the backstage of the park.
The trailer ends with Delores saying “We can save this world. We can burn it to the ground. And from the ashes build a new world. Our world.” We see a complete 180 of what started out as something where “your dreams come true” turn into something that is a living nightmare, with hosts committing acts of violence on their guests.”
Season 2 promises to the other layers that exist within this park, both onstage and behind-the-scenes. And remember, the season one finale introduced us to a world with samurais. These hosts appeared to be unaffected by what is going on in Westworld, so how will that factor in going into season 2?
With so many questions left unanswered, Westworld is bringing back that Lost mystery we all know and love. And hopefully it answers those questions we’ve been dying to know while also leaving us with something very intriguing.
Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, Ed Harris, and Jimmi Simpson will all reprise their respective roles. The first episode of Westworld Season 2 premieres on April 22, 2018.
