‘Avengers: Infinity War’: Thanos Plans To Save The Universe By Destroying It

Thanos

“You got to break some eggs if you want to make an omelet” is an idiom used to describe a situation where, if a person wants to achieve a certain goal, sacrifices have to be made. So how does that apply to someone like Thanos (Josh Brolin), whose views are nothing but destruction?

Well, it appears that one man’s destruction is another Mad Titan’s saving the universe. In EW’s exclusive coverage of Avengers: Infinity War, it is revealed that Thanos isn’t out to destroy the universe outright. He is actually here to save it. The only thing is, he knows that he may have to kill off another in order to achieve his goal. More on the story, below.

Since the end of The Avengers, we’ve all suspected that Thanos would appear as the main antagonist of an Avengers film. However, the studio strategically placed the six Infinity Stones throughout different films. Each of them acting as a MacGuffin that would aid or hinder the title heroes.

So why is Thanos so content on collecting all six Stones. He is doing it in hopes of appeasing the embodiment of Death. But there is more to it than that. He sees himself as the savior of the universe, and the only way to save “half of it,” is to “destroy the other half.”

“That’s either genius or horrific, depending on your point of view, and most of our point of views say it’s pretty horrific,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige tells EW.

In Captain America: The First Avenger, the Red Skull weaponized the Tesseract in an attempt to win World War II. It appeared again in The Avengers when Loki (Tom Hiddleston) used it to open a portal to bring an army through to invade Earth.

The Spear is actually the Mind Stone, a powerful gem that could take over the minds of its victims, who would have access to a wealth of knowledge they did not have before being affected by the stone’s powers. Both were used in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The Aether was a living, liquefied stone that could bring forth dark matter energy and bend reality. However, by the end of Thor: The Dark World, the Asgardians were able to contain its power, and give it to the Collector (Benicio Del Toro) so that the two stones wouldn’t be in close proximity from each other.

The Orb, or Power Stone, is a gem of immense strength. Just like its namesake, it would amplify the powers of anyone who holds it. So just imagine what it could do to a stone. Although, we’ve seen that only a few people like Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) are able to wield its power.

Then there is the Time Stone, a stone that could let its holder manipulate time. However, that power is contained inside the Eye of Agamotto, a mystical item that is used by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch).

So where is the Soul Stone? It’s not clear exactly where it is, but Thanos is clearly on the hunt for it. The Mad Titan is already in possession of two, the Space Stone and Power Stone. His appearance in New York City could not be a coincidence since his Q-Ship is hovering right over Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. And based on leaked footage, it looks like he’s already got the Aether, and in the trailer we could see someone, probably one of the members of Thanos’s Black Order, pry the Mind Stone out of Vision’s (Paul Bettany) head.

And when these stones are put together inside the Infinity Gauntlet it allows Thanos to bend time, space, and reality, and grant him almost unlimited power and knowledge.

And the only way that Thanos can obtain that knowledge is if Proxima Midnight, one of Thanos’s loyal soldiers, can take it from Vision, the Mind Stone’s current owner. However, it looks like their attempts to take the stone ends in failure, and it is up to Captain America (Chris Evans) to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. So he takes it to Wakanda where he believes he can do that.

Of this, Infinity War co-director Anthony Russo said:

“Cap makes the decision to bring [Vision] here to Wakanda. Earth is making its last stand to keep the stone from Thanos. It’s the best place to make your last stand.”

“It’s never been conquered, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been challenged,” Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman added.

Avengers: Infinity War opens in theaters on April 27, 2018. Click right here for more on the film.

  1. So the Russo Brothers that completely changed the motivations for Thanos and he’s not in love with Death? That sucks! Marvel Films missed an opportunity to make Hela make the equivalent of Death and object of Thanos’ desire. And Adam Warlock isn’t going to be in it, as it seems he’s being saved for GOTG Vol.3! So much for a decent adaptation of “The Infinity Gauntlet”. I’m sure that “Avengers: Infinity War” will make money, but it may also be Marvel Studios first major missteps.
