Straight from the hip, there is nothing serious about Dungeons & Dragons: Evil At Baldur’s Gate #1 except that it is seriously fun. Imagine, if you will, that we had a mashup of the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon with Teen Titans Go! and it was presented in comic book form. That is essentially what we have here. It’s certainly entertaining, but also, just as certainly, not deep in plot or characters.
The premise is a band of adventurers who are returning home after being abroad. They are fugitives for some undisclosed reason, so they are moving stealthily towards a destination. We know they are adventurers because they each tell us that, almost ad nauseum. It truly felt like a gaming group personified, to be honest. The swagger and bravado of the characters was almost an incarnation of one of my high school D&D games. Fun, but without much substance.
But don’t let that put you off the comic, I liked it. It was nothing more or less than I expected. Well, except for the hamster. Curious? Well, you’ll need to read this first issue then! Ciao!
