Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska are the newest members of the new Charlie’s Angels. The film, which will be directed by Elizabeth Banks, will now focus on a new group of Charlie’s Angels for a new generation. More on the story here below.
The Hollywood Reporter says the film’s “new story takes the detective agency premise of the original television series and turn-of-the new century movies and takes it global, with the Townsend Agency now a worldwide security and intelligence service that has teams around the planet. The movie will focus on one of those teams and the next generation of Angels.”
The film would mark the return of Stewart to a blockbuster film. The actress has been staying away from major studio films and has turned her attention to more indie fare. Scott is a relatively new actress, having starred in the reboot of Power Rangers and can next be seen as Jasmine in Disney’s live-action reboot of Aladdin. As for Balinska, she has had multiple television roles in the UK.
Banks will also be turning to the front of the camera, so to speak. She will be providing the voice of the new Charlie Townsend, the head of the Townshend agency, which will provide security and intelligence services around the world. Considering her background in comedy, one would assume that this new vision would have a comedic slant to it, more so than previous generations that came before it.
“Charlie’s Angels, for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the ’70s,” said Banks in a statement. “This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels. I couldn’t be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world.”
For those who are not familiar with the franchise, Charlie’s Angels is based on a popular 1970s television series starring Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Jaclyn Smith. It then got a big0screen adaptation from McG, starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu. The film was enough of a success to get a sequel.
Along with Banks directing and appearing in the new movie, she will also be writing it alongside Jay Basu (The Girl in the Spider’s Web), working off of earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Semi Chellas.
Sony has scheduled the new Charlie’s Angels for a September 27, 2019 release.
