Taraji P. Henson in What Men Want from Paramount Pictures and Paramount Players.

Remakes simply can’t be helped. So in order to help a remake from feeling repetitious, it’s going to have to offer an interesting twist in order to keep things fresh. In the case of What Men Want, a re-imagining of the Mel Gibson-starring comedy vehicle What Women Want, we see Taraji P. Henson take the lead as a woman with the ability to hear men’s most inner thoughts.

An official trailer for the film has been released by Paramount, and you can check it out below.

In What Women Want — which was directed by Nancy Meyers, who wrote the story for this Adam Shankman-directed re-imagining — Gibson played a womanizer who can listen to women’s thoughts. Of course, he takes advantage of this newfound power, only to learn that there is much more to a woman than their appearance. Now in What Men Want, we seen the roles being swapped. In this gender-bent take on that idea, Henson can hear what the men are thinking. But this is 2018, times have certainly changed since the 2000 original was released.

Henson plays a sports agent in a male-dominated business, who is passed up for a well-deserved promotion. Frustrated, she is unsure what to do to advance her career when she is constantly overlooked. But when she gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts, she uses this power to outfox them. However, this newfound power, when used irresponsibly, could put some of her friendships and a possible relationship to the test. The trailer pretty much spells it out for everyone who watches it, which is both expected and unfortunate.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Ali Davis (Taraji P. Henson) is a successful sports agent who’s constantly boxed out by her male colleagues. When Ali is passed up for a well-deserved promotion, she questions what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world… until she gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts! With her newfound power, Ali looks to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she has to go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest (Aldis Hodge) to the test. WHAT MEN WANT is the latest comedy from director Adam Shankman (HAIRSPRAY) and producers Will Packer and James Lopez (GIRLS TRIP), co-starring Tracy Morgan, Richard Roundtree, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Josh Brener, Tamala Jones, Phoebe Robinson, Max Greenfield, Jason Jones, Brian Bosworth, Chris Witaske and Erykah Badu.

Despite the fact that it looks like we’ve seen the entire film in one sitting, the film looks reasonably entertaining. Of course, it was about time we see a film like this. I’m just surprised that it took almost 18 years for this to happen. But hey, look how long it took for an all-Asian cast to appear in a mainstream film.

Anyways, What Men Want opens in theaters on January 11, 2019.
