We’ve always known Star Wars and Marvel would be a big part of Disney’s streaming service, which will be called Disney Play. But it’s not just going to be a bunch of existing movies, there’s going to be original content as well. We know that multiple original Star Wars series are currently being developed, including one with Iron Man director Jon Favreau involved. We also know that these series will not be cheap to produce.
Now we’re starting to see what’s in the works on the Marvel side of things. It’s being reported that Disney is developing multiple Marvel series revolving around various characters such as Loki, Scarlet Witch, and other characters who haven’t received their own standalone movies.
But the most exciting thing about this news is that the actors who have played these characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are expected to reprise the roles in these series. If that holds true, Tom Hiddleston will once again play Loki. Elizabeth Olsen will play Scarlet Witch. And so on.
The way this will work is that these will be limited series. Each is expected to be around six to eight episodes long. So actors won’t need to commit to a multi-season show. And Marvel fans will get six to eight more hours with some of their favorite characters.
Like the Star Wars series, the Marvel series are also expected to have sizable budgets comparable to big studio productions.
Another interesting thing about these series is that they’ll be produced through Marvel Studios, which handles the MCU. Other Marvel shows like Daredevil, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Legion are through Marvel Television. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is even expected to be involved in their development.
Further details on the stories these limited series will tell are not yet known. It is stressed, however, that fans shouldn’t expect to see characters who have had their own movies show up. At least not at first—who knows what will happen down the road a bit. This is about the smaller characters who haven’t had the spotlight all to themselves.
Disney Play is expected to launch sometime in 2019.
