As the final season of Game of Thrones approaches—something fans are no doubt excited about and dreading at the same time—we know that multiple spinoffs are still possible.
The closest spinoff comes from Game of Thrones author and creator George R.R. Martin and Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men, and Kingsman writer Jane Goldman. And now that very same spinoff has found itself a star as two-time Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts has joined the cast of the show.
There are not many details on who exactly Watts will be playing or what the story will be about yet, but here’s what we do know from HBO:
What to Know About the Game of Thrones Prequel
There’s been a lot of speculation about a prequel to Game of Thrones, but here’s what’s known so far.
What’s it about? Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: it’s not the story we think we know.
Who will it star? So far the only official name on the list is Oscar-nominee Naomi Watts (21 Grams). Her character will be a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.
Who is behind it? Jane Goldman and GoT author George R.R. Martin are the creators of this new series. Both will executive produce, alongside James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray, Vince Gerardis and Daniel Zelman. Martin was also an executive producer on Game of Thrones and contributed to several episode scripts.
