Denis Villeneuve‘s adaptation of Dune has done some terrific casting as of late. The reboot already has Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, and Charlotte Rampling. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, it will be adding Oscar Isaac in a pivotal role.
According to reports, the Star Wars actor will be joining the film as Duke Leto Atreides, the father of Paul Atreides (set to be played by Chalamet). More on the report below.
Per Variety, the Dune reboot centers on Paul Atreides, whose family assumes control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, jurisdiction over Arrakis is contested among competing noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship with nature, as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s reign.
As aforementioned, Isaac will be playing Leto Atreides, a role that was once played by Jürgen Prochnow in David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation. Ferguson is set to play Jessica Atreides, with Skarsgard and Bautista set to play Vladimir Harkonnen and Glossu Rabban. And just a few weeks ago, Charlotte Rampling was cast as Reverend Mother Mohiam.
Dune is Villeneuve’s ninth directorial effort. It follows films like Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049. While Blade Runner 2049 wasn’t the hit that Warner Bros. hoped it would be, the director still has more than enough credibility to bring in audiences and critical praise thanks to prior efforts. Not only that, but the cast for Dune looks fantastic, and how could anyone not want to go see something that has Isaac, Chalamet, Ferguson, Skarsgard, Bautista, and Rampling in it. And the cast can only get better from there.
Villeneuve says that his goal is to adapt Dune into a two-part film. Whether or not he gets his way remains to be seen. Filming is expected to begin later this month, but no release date has been set.
As for Isaac, he can next be seen alongside Ben Affleck in Netflix’s action thriller Triple Frontier. After that, he will reprise his role as Poe Dameron in Star Wars: Episode IX. He also has a lead voice role in Sony Animation’s adaptation of The Addams Family.
Of course, we will keep you posted as soon as more developments come in.
