The Stand

CBS All Access, CBS’s subscription streaming service, announced on Thursday that Stephen King will write the last part of The Stand, their miniseries adaptation of the author’s 1978 bestselling novel of the same name. King’s contribution to the upcoming 10-episode limited event series will be a new coda for the story that won’t be found in the book.

During a presentation on Thursday at the Television Critics Association, per Deadline, CBS All Access EVP Julie McNamara said:

For fans of the book who have wondered what became of the survivors of the stand, this episode will contain a story that takes us beyond the book to answer those questions,” CBS All Access EVP Julie McNamara said. “A continuation to The Stand; we can’t wait to share that with the world.” [Source: Deadline]

King then posted to his Twitter account on Thursday night that the final episode to the miniseries is already written and that this ending has been in his mind for 30 years.

Per CBS All Access, here’s a brief description of the limited series:

THE STAND is Stephen King’s apocalyptic vision of a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil. The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

The network also confirmed the casting of James Marsden, Amber Heard, Odessa Young, and Henry Zaga to the series, which was written by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and Ben Cavell (SEAL Team) with Boone also directing and showrunning, and provided character descriptions (see that here below).

As for the actors, here’s the official description of their characters, per a press release from CBS All Access:

James Marsden will portray Stu Redman, an ordinary working-class factory man in an extraordinary situation with a damaged quality to him that belies his exterior.

Amber Heard will play Nadine Cross, a deeply conflicted woman who feels the consequences of her actions, but is still compelled by her allegiance to Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

Odessa Young will play Frannie Goldsmith, a pregnant young woman navigating a strange new world, who also has the foresight to recognize that there is evil lurking beyond the Dark Man.

Henry Zaga will portray Nick Andros, a young deaf and mute man who finds himself in a position of authority when the unthinkable happens. He has a habit of risking his own well-being for the safety of others.

Marsden is best known for his role in the original X-Men films and was recently on the Netflix series hit Dead to Me. Amber Heard recently starred with Jason Momoa in WB’s DCEU films Aquaman and Justice League. Young starred opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson in A Million Little Pieces and will next be seen co-starring with Elisabeth Moss in the film Shirley. Zaga is on the television series 13 Reasons Why and is also part of Josh Boone’s upcoming film, X-Men: New Mutants.

No date yet for when The Stand will launch on CBS All Access, but filming is expected to run from September 16, 2019 to March 11, 2020.

King’s 1,200-page post-apocalyptic horror-fantasy novel was previously adapted in 1994 into a 4-part made-for-TV miniseries starring Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe, Ossie Davis, Molly Ringwald, and Ed Harris. King wrote the teleplay and executive produced the well-received ABC miniseries (he also had a small role).
