Given the recent success of Spider-Man films after joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was some hope that Disney and Sony would continue to play nice with each other. However, that all came to a crashing halt when it was confirmed that the deal to share the character was off, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige would no longer produce any new Spider-Man titles. This meant that Spidey could no longer play in the MCU sandbox, and that Sony was free to use the Webslinger as they please. This was disappointing news to many, especially those who saw that it was Marvel Studios who was the one to bring Spidey back to greatness after a less than impressive and short-lived reboot.
But none are more disappointed than the two people at the center of all of this, Feige and star Tom Holland. While at the D23 Expo, the two were able to share their thoughts on the split. Check out what they had to say below.
At the end of the Onward portion of the studio panel, Holland told attendees:
“It’s been a crazy week, but I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, I love you 3000.”
Perhaps this was a sign of hope that Disney and Sony would come back to the table and make a deal. However, in an interview Holland did with Entertainment Weekly, it doesn’t look like that is happening anytime soon:
“Basically, we’ve made five great movies. It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”
Now, it seems like if Holland wants to play as Spider-Man for as long as he can, he is going to be as diplomatic as possible with what he has to say about the situation at hand. As hopeful as Holland is, Kevin Feige sounded less optimistic but still thankful for the opportunity that Sony gave him to let Spider-Man be a part of the MCU:
“I’m feeling about Spider-Man gratitude and joy. We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man: two standalone films and three with the Avengers. It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”
It’s not so much that Feige is giving up as he is being real about the situation. Honestly, a deal like this is unprecedented. No one thought that Disney and Sony would ever come to a deal to share Spider-man. And yet, it happened. Not only did he get to make his debut in Captain America: Civil War, he got two standalone films in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. And was able to join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
It would really be a shame if Spider-Man could not at least get an MCU trilogy to call his own and be a part of at least one more ensemble.
