Talk about a convoluted history! This character has seen more revisions than the MLA Handbook! In Sheena: Queen of the Jungle #0, we see a modern take on a vintage character. Older than Wonder Woman but just as overtly sexualized for decades, Sheena has been both a powerful role model and a scantily clad vixen. Time after time, people have tried to create the perfect version of this character only to fall short of their goals. Not only have a multitude of comic companies tried to invigorate this character over the years, but a feature film and two different television series. Other adaptations, sans the name, have occurred but that is clearly more influence than attempt.

This particular issue is obviously a set up for the upcoming series and it is not quite a full length comic, weighing in at fifteen pages of story. But when something costs you merely a quarter, you should not complain even a little. Portraying the heroine in a strong, thoughtful manner, this sneak peek is little more than an introduction but still has a bit of adventure wedged into its small frame. There is quite a bit more dialogue than expected but she does speak with animals in several past versions. This oratory seems, however, to be mainly for the reader and not really to drive the plot.

Cycles. Everything in existence seems to be cyclical. Take this comic for instance. The Mummy: Volume 1: Palimpsest is a rebirth of the mummy movie franchise that Hammer Films brought to the silver screen in 1959. These were, to some extent, a rebirth themselves from the old black and white films decades earlier. But what Hammer Films did was modernize the characters and connect to a whole new generation of fans.

So, in the spirit of it all, Titan Comics has partnered with Hammer to create this all new adventure. Originally a five issue mini-series, this trade paperback combines all of Ronilson Freire‘s sequential art with a whole lot more in the way of galleries, history, and commentary. With each resurrection of our iconic main character, we see some subtle (and not so subtle) differences that reflect the times in which we live. This concept is explored by Peter Milligan in the comic script in such a way as to make as obvious point of different life is today than what it once was.

Footloose and fancy free. That is the first phrase that comes to mind when reading Time & Vine #1. If someone I knew had direct access to time travel and it involved imbibing wine, I would be all in. No hesitation, nothing. Just give me a drink and let’s go enjoy the ride.

John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction James Ninness
