Directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and written by James Gunn (Slither, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series), 2004’s Dawn of the Dead is a remake of George A. Romero’s 1978 film of the same name. Arguably Snyder’s best film, and one of the better horror remakes of the past 20 years, the 2004 movie honors the original while offering a fresh, innovative take on the zombie subgenre.

A mysterious virus is turning people into flesh-eating zombies. Unlike Romero’s slow but relentless living dead, Snyder and Gunn pull from Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later playbook and apply the rabies-like symptoms of the 2002 film’s “Rage Virus” to their reanimated corpses, creating a horde of aggressive, fast-moving zombies that can run, jump, and climb. Essentially, the zombies of the new millennium are CrossFit enthusiasts on bath salts.

When someone mentions the name Thor these days, most folks immediately start thinking of a certain comic book superhero that has been in a few movies lately. If I were to speak the word Ragnarok, then those same people would think I speak of the newest film in that hero’s franchise. But trust me, Ragnarok: Last God Standing Vol. 1 is so much more than that.

In this story, Ragnarok is a thing of the past. Centuries before the start of our tale, the gods and their foes have waged their war across the nine realms and have managed to mostly kill one another off. Entire civilizations have fallen, leaving the survivors to suffer and do anything to survive. Powers still exist but they are far less prominent than before the end times.

How Heavy Metal and Yo Gabba Gabba Help Influenced The ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Score

Thor Ragnarok Tessa Thompson

Shooting a movie can be a grueling process for everyone on set. And one way that directors can make it easier for everyone is to play music. Though the choice can vary from director to director, most would agree that these productions are a lot easier to go through if everyone is loosened up. And director Taika Waititi made Thor: Ragnarok a lot of fun with shifting the franchise in a new direction with the heavy metal vibes.

Geeks of Doom recently sat down with fellow members of the press at the Thor: Ragnarok junket, where we learned more about the process of making the film, and the music that played while on set. But as for the film’s heavy metal look, Waititi said he had the full support of everyone over at Marvel Studios. In doing so, he gave us an absolute bombastic film that looks like it was pulled straight off a heavy metal cover art and tons of fun.

But that isn’t the only musical inspiration behind Thor: Ragnarok. In fact, there was another band that helped influence the film. And I use that term very loosely. There were a couple of Yo Gabba Gabba songs that helped the cast get through the production. Find out more about this in the full story below.
