After I Am Legend pulled in $585 million worldwide back in 2007, it was pretty obvious that a sequel was all but guaranteed.

It’s been a little longer than expected, but now it appears that I Am Legend 2 is picking up speed. It’s being reported that Arash Amel has been hired to write a script for the sequel, and that Will Smith and Akiva Goldsman are attached as producers.

While getting ready for his board game-to-movie action blockbuster Battleship to hit theaters on May 18, 2012, director Peter Berg (The Rundown, The Kingdom) offered up an update on the possibility of a Hancock 2 happening.

Berg basically said that everyone involved, including star Will Smith, wanted the movie to happen, and that it was just a matter of finding the time when everyone could actually do it.

Back in September of 2010, a gigantic piece of news came along: director Ron Howard, his Imagine Entertainment partner, Brian Grazer, and writer Akiva Goldsman were developing an absolutely astonishing three–film, two–season TV series combo package based on Stephen King‘s seven–book series, The Dark Tower.

The announcement was unheard of, and Howard and his team had a deal in place with Universal Pictures and NBC Universal that would give him the freedom to film most of it together, much like Peter Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings…meaning the studio had to have the ultimate confidence in the project. The plan was for Goldsman to write the first film’s script and the first season of the TV show, with Howard directing. The first movie was to be followed by the first season of the TV series””which would fill in many of the story details and bridge the first and second movies””and then the second movie would be followed by a prequel season of the TV series before the final film hit. They even had Javier Bardem attached to star in the movies and first season of the show.

Here we have some news that’s so massive, it almost seems made up; like there’s no possible way the whole plan will come together as they want it to. In any case, if this announcement even partially plays out, it could be one of the most exciting book-to-film/TV adaptations we’ve ever seen.

Imagine Entertainment’s Ron Howard will direct and Akiva Goldsman will write the first film and first season of the series.

In the same interview with the LA Times that revealed Marvel topper Kevin Feige’s view of Batman & Robin as the most important comic book movie ever to be made, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman spoke about all of his other upcoming projects for DC Comics. The best part of everything talked about was easily Swamp Thing. At first this was just another of many remakes which actually sounded pretty cheesy, but with this interview, some excitement has begun to build up. Goldsman explained that they “want a film with real Southern, dark horror overtones, a little bit like a classic Universal horror film,” and that they actually want to make the movie closer to Alan Moore‘s popular comic book vision of the character and not based on the 80s movies.

With these two things, this new Swamp Thing has a lot more potential than it once had, though there is still a long way to go before we really see what they try to do with the property. The article even mentions that Guillermo del Toro himself considers Swamp Thing one of the “few remaining Holy Grails” of comic book characters.
