D23 Expo 2013: Disney Pixar The Good Dinosaur banner

“This is the biggest ‘what if?’ ever,” John Lasseter said today at the Animation panel at this year’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA, in describing Disney/Pixar’s animated feature The Good Dinosaur. Most Pixar films start off with big questions, he said, and The Good Dinosaur is no exception. Footage was shown, and details about the characters and who’d be voicing them were announced.

The main character is Arlo the Apatosaurus, as voiced by Lucas Neff. Other characters in the film include members of Arlo’s family: John Lithgow as Poppa, Frances McDormand as Momma, Bill Hader as older brother Forrest, Neil Patrick Harris as brother Cliff, Judy Greer as sister Ivy, and then there’s Neff as Arlo. Hader, Greer and Neff came out onto the stage, having just met one another.

D23 2013: Inside Out panel banner

The Summer 2015 Pixar feature Inside Out was investigated in great depth at today’s Animation panel at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA, with the voice cast announced for the Disney/Pixar animated film and wow does this look like a winner.

Inside Out follows 11-year-old named Riley, who moves to the unfamiliar San Francisco. What awaits her there? We’re sure to find out, but what is certain is we will discover what’s inside her mind, which are represented here as five main characters that drive Riley’s personality and actions, known as the Five Emotions. Director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera talked about the Five Emotions and announced which actors will voice them.

Lewis Black voices red guy Anger, dressed in a business suit; Mindy Kaling voices careful and straightforward Disgust; Bill Hader returns to Pixar again as the voice of Fear, a nerdy guy; Amy Poehler voices Joy, who glows and possesses blue hair; and Phyllis Smith voices Sadness, adorned in a blue sweater. All five play into how Riley behaves.

D23 Expo 2013: Toy Story of Terror banner

At the Animation panel at this year’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA, we were treated to the first ten minutes of Pixar’s Halloween special, Toy Story of Terror, where the toys of Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story films experience horrifying moments at a haunted roadside hotel, so it seems.

Needless to say there are numerous laugh-inducing jokes in this footage. We first find Woody, Buzz, Mr. Potato Head, Jessie, Trixie, Rex, and Mr. Pricklepants watching an old horror film on a DVD player in the trunk of a car – driven by Bonnie’s mother. Their drive takes place during a dark and stormy night – no pun intended – and the toys arrive at a haunted hotel. Some of the toys, including Mr. Potato Head and Trixie, want to investigate the hotel room beyond the security of their bag. But then mysterious things happen. They disappear. First Potato Head and then Trixie! The other toys search for them, but one by one they are snatched by an unknown, mysterious being. Jessie is all alone in the bathroom, not sure where to head next. Jessie then finds a somewhat-deranged soldier toy warning her about the terrifying situation. Cut!

Disney In Depth banner

Earlier this week I had the privilege to participate in a D23 Expo conference call with Disney Legends and Oscar-winning musicians Alan Menken and Richard Sherman, as moderated by D23’s Jeffrey Epstein. Both Menken and Sherman will be performing “The Disney Songbook,” a monumental concert event at D23 Expo this weekend. The two men have never played to Disney audiences together, making this as a must-see occasion.

Here are my conversations with the extraordinary musical talents.
