Rise of the Planet of the Apes

As luck would have it, Fox didn’t need to make a mad scramble to find a director for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, after Rupert Wyatt exited because he felt he couldn’t give the sequel the same quality as he did in the first film. Let Me In and Cloverfield director Matt Reeves was brought in to direct the film, which would be his first time directing a major summer tentpole flick.

But before Reeves can sit in the director’s chair, Mark Bomback will be rewriting the draft that Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penned. The script recently saw some revisions done by Contagion scribe Scott Burns.

Matt Reeves

After taking a stab at writing and directing Let Me In, Matt Reeves attached himself to helm a new version of The Twilight Zone for Warner Bros. Unlike the last Twilight Zone film, which consisted of multiple vignettes directed by a variety of filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, George Miller, and John Landis, this iteration would only have one director. However, it’s been a year since the announcement was made and the film is no closer to starting principal photography. As a result, Reeves is exiting the project.

Variety reports that with Reeves out as director, WB has sent out a directing assignment to find the right person to direct. No word yet on who received the assignment. There were no reported creative conflicts between the two parties, however, Reeves’ schedule played a huge part in his decision to leave The Twilight Zone remake. Reeves is currently attached to projects like The Passage, This Dark Endeavor, and The Invisible Woman, which leads us to an interesting development for Dawn of Planet of the Apes.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Before summer 2011 ended, audiences were completely taken by Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Its success had 20th Century Fox quickly commission for a sequel to be put into production, with Wyatt being its director once again.

However, there seems to be some trouble as Wyatt may be unable to commit to direct the sequel, which is titled Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. But it’s not because he is having troubles with the studio, it’s because he feels as though he is unable to deliver the same quality of film he did with his first Apes film and make the scheduled release date of May 23rd, 2014.
