Final Fantasy XIII, Playstation 3Final Fantasy XIII Review
Platforms: Playstation 3 | Xbox 360
Publisher: Square Enix
Price: $59.99
Release date: March 9, 2010

I am a pretty big Final Fantasy fan, so of course I was going to pick this game up as quickly as I could get my grubby little hands upon it. As the first Final Fantasy game on the current generation of system, I was excepting to see the next step up in graphics above the last game, which was one of the best looking games on the PS2. More than that though, I just wanted a game that was familiar to me while having enough change so that it didn’t feel exactly like the last game. Like I said, I’m a fan of the series, so I know pretty much what I’m going to get, and this game succeeded in giving me a game I had fun with and that was worth my time. It took a little while to convince me, but once the game had its claws into me, I knew I was in for the next 40 hours of game play.

Story has always been a big element of Final Fantasy games, and this one is no different. The players live in the world of Cocoon, a land that is under siege by fear of creatures from a world below theirs called Pulse. Both worlds are controlled by entities call fal’cie, and these entities give out quests to regular people by turning them into l’cie. The l’cie are charged with a specific goal, and if they reach that goal, they become crystals and gain eternal life of some sort. Those who don’t complete their goals become monsters. Into this world walk six characters who become l’cie, and must then find out what their quest is. (Trust me, if your eyes have glazed over at that last paragraph, I don’t blame you. These are just a few of the concepts that are thrown at the player in the first few hours, and it is not the easiest thing to keep track of.)

E3

It has been a few days now since the E3 video game and electronics convention just came and went, leaving many exciting previews and announcements in its wake, but we here at Geeks of Doom wanted to put together a basic wrap-up for those of you who missed it all and do not yet know of all of the treasures that came of it. The big dogs in Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all had exciting conventions, with Sony and Microsoft making some magnificent announcements. Included in this mass of geek-tastic announcements: A look at Microsoft’s motion-capture attempt with Project Natal, Sony’s motion-capture prototype, and games like Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Halo: ODST, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, God of War III, and others.

In celebration of the convention and all of the great things that came out of it, we’ve decided to put together this little recap of the biggest and brightest things that we saw. We will do our very best to offer information on the products, as well as the mind-blowing videos that were shown! To start, we’ll go over the three main outlets and what they presented to us. After that, we’ll take a look at all of the games and videos that were also presented by the various publishers.

Click on over for some great videos of the future of gaming via motion sensors, as well as a collection of wonderful trailers and videos to watch!

Get It While It’s Hot: ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ Demo Footage!

The story isn’t 100% clear yet, but apparently some lucky chap got their hands on the demo for long-coming Final Fantasy XIII. The user streamed themselves playing the demo on Justin.TV for as long as he could, and a decent amount of demo footage is now all over the Inter-webs.

Personally, I’ve never liked the Final Fantasy games. It could just be ignorance on my part, but the idea of players actually taking turns trying to kill each other instead of just having at it…well, that just pisses me off thinking about it. One thing no one — including myself — can deny, is how amazing the games have been visually. Final Fantasy games have always set the bar for graphics, visuals, and landscapes at unbelievably high levels, and this one doesn’t look to have walked away from those standards. Coming from me, a non-fan, trust me when I say, this game looks really beautiful.

I have no idea how long these videos will stay available to watch, so jump at it immediately. I’ve included a much higher quality version video which shows a few minutes of pre-game movie footage, as well as the first two or so minutes of the demo. After that, there’s also a few videos which hold a hell of a lot more footage, including gameplay! Might I suggest watching the first high quality version to get an idea, and then skipping ahead on the next video to where you left off.

Click over to watch away!
