Fox’s X-Men franchise continues to grow and thrive, with the recent success of X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Wolverine, the studio is looking to other mutants to expand their franchise. One of the first films will be focus on Gambit. Channing Tatum has already been confirmed to play the Ragin’ Cajun, and now there are new reports of the project gaining more steam.

According to Deadline, a new writer has been tapped to pen the script, which will be based on Chris Claremont’s treatment of the character. Hit the jump for more.

After months of rumors and speculation, and much fan debate, Channing Tatum is confirmed to play Gambit from the X-Men universe. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner actually reached out to Tatum after he commented that he would like to play as the Ragin’ Cajun in an interview back in September. According to the actor, if he did get the role, he would be using a real cajun accent.

So where does Gambit fit in the whole X-Men franchise now that the film’s chronology will likely change dramatically due to the events in X-Men: Days Of Future Past? What does Shuler Donner have to say about this? Hit the jump to learn more.

While doing the press rounds back in September for White House Down, Channing Tatum was asked if he would like to be in a superhero movie. The actor excitedly replied, yes, but went even further by specifically naming Gambit as the hero he would like to play. Tatum’s roles have ranged from exotic dancer to G.I. Joe to Superman (in Lego form for the upcoming The Lego Movie). Tatum said that if he were to play Gambit, he would use a real Cajun accent, given that he has family ties in New Orleans.

Now, Lauren Shuler Donner, a producer who has worked on the X-Men films since the very beginning, says that she is dying to make Tatum the next Gambit, but that she has to convince Fox to agree to this.

In the same overseas White House Down junket, Tatum was asked if he would like to “get in” on the role of a superhero. Tatum excitedly said yes. He then added if he had his pick, he would play Gambit, because of his family ties to New Orleans.
