Writer Garth Ennis has a history of creating characters who like to get violent from time to time, and his new series, Jennifer Blood features just such a character. Jennifer Blood is a housewife by day and a killer by night, hunting down mobsters and other criminals and dispatching them with brutal efficiency. The series has got all of Ennis’ trademark outlandish characters and some of the old ultra-violence. From what I’ve read, it seems like a fun series with tons of action.

In previous issues of the series, Jennifer Blood has made a name for herself and has attracted the wrong kind of attention. Now someone has hired a team of killers to take Jennifer out. The killers are a team of young girls who act like every anime schoolgirl ninja stereotype, complete with broken English and inappropriate laughing. Jennifer has a plan though and isn’t going to let herself be taken out by a bunch of clichés.

Deadpoolmax #7 (of 12) (Marvel/Max – $3.99) If you had told me a year ago that a Deadpool book would be one of my favorite titles, I would have said you were crazy, but David Lapham and Kyle Baker‘s Deadpoolmax has made me a believer. Everything that readers love about Deadpool is here, it’s just cranked up. Add to it Baker’s unique art style, and you get a crazy, entertaining book that I can’t get enough of.

X-Factor #218 (Marvel – $2.99) I was talking to someone at last year’s New York Comic-Con, and they said they were looking for a socially relevant comic and didn’t know if there was one, and the first book I told them about was X-Factor. Writer Peter David uses each issue to tackle a wide variety of modern subjects, while still telling fun adventure stories with a cast of characters I have come to love. If I had a complaint about the book it is that it can’t hold onto a regular artist to save its life, but the series has maintained such a high story quality that I forgive it.

Secret Six #32 (DC Comics – $2.99) – Secret Six is easily one of my favorite ongoing series, so don’t be surprised when you see this book on my list every month. Not enough people read this book, and that’s a crime. It’s one of the most consistently awesome comics to come out on a regular basis, and this current storyline is no exception. In this second issue of the current story arc, writer Gail Simone takes the Secret Six into Hell to solve one of the most exciting story lines that was set up at the very beginning of the series. This series continues to be a “can’t miss,” so don’t miss it!

Chew #18 (Image Comics – $2.99) – Chew is another one of those books that you don’t want to miss out on. I’ve read this series from the beginning, and although you need to read the entire series, each issue does have a catch-up prologue to explain what the series is about. It’s a really quirky title that’s a blast to read every month with great writing and art. It never disappoints, and with the recent announcement that Showtime will be adapting the series to a television show, you should really get in when you can.

Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson‘s The Boys comic put out by Dynamite, which is scheduled for a big screen release in 2011, might have a director. While it was originally reported by Collider that Samuel Bayer wanted to adapt the comic, they are now reporting that they have two sources that say that Adam McKay is in talks with Sony Pictures about directing the film.

Will this be a good move considering McKay’s previous work? Anchorman and the upcoming The Other Guys being a completely different style of film it will definitely make an interesting experiment. The Boys will definitely be a departure for him, but McKay has made it known that he has wanted to get his hands on a comic book movie for quite a while now. It is also immensely intriguing that McKay would choose such a polarizing comic book to start with. The Boys is more of a deconstruction of superheroes than a normal comics story.
