In Christopher Nolan‘s 2006 film, The Prestige, Cutter (Michael Caine) explains, “Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts.”

“The first part is called The Pledge. The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course… it probably isn’t.”

“The second act is called The Turn. The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you’re looking for the secret… but you won’t find it, because of course you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn’t clap yet. Because making something disappear isn’t enough; you have to bring it back.”

“That’s why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call The Prestige.” Ladies and gentlemen, that’s The Dark Knight Rises – the third act to an astounding magic trick by a world-class illusionist in director Christopher Nolan.

Every day here at Doom HQ we receive tons of tips from our readers about really cool stuff from the world of geek, as well as promotional materials for new films, comic books, collectibles, and much more. While we do our best to bring you as much of it as possible, we don’t always have enough geek manpower available to cover it all on a daily basis. But we hate the idea of all of this really cool stuff wasting away in our inbox. How could we NOT cover it? Hence why we’ve resurrected our long-defunct column Bits Of Doom, now rebranded and revamped as Doom Digest, a collection of easily digestible bits of news, videos, photos, and other goodies.

Today: Gary Oldman‘s PSA against acting athletes, Michael Bay visits USH’s Transformers ride, The Avengers tops this year’s bloopers list, clips from The Amazing Spider-Man, and Inception done with LEGOs, plus Bits Of Doom.

Hugh Laurie

Earlier this week we reported that Abbie Cornish and Samuel L. Jackson were joining the cast of Jose Padilha‘s Robocop reboot. But the film still lacked a force for Robocop to deal with. That has all changed.

Rather than spend time with a vacation after working on eight seasons of the Fox medical drama House, actor Hugh Laurie is quickly getting back to work. And he is doing it in a very big way. Laurie is now signed on to play as the villain of the movie.

RoboCop

Say what you will about remakes and reboots (yes, they’re usually a horrible idea and a classic money-grab technique), but when someone takes the time to put one together, there is always that chance it could be good.

We’re still far from knowing whether or not MGM’s reboot of the still-incredible 1987 Paul Verhoeven sci-fi classic, RoboCop, will pleasantly surprise us, but what is known is that the studio and director Jose Padilha are doing a fine job putting together an intriguing cast.

It was reported recently that the legendary Samuel L. Jackson had joined the cast, and now Abbie Cornish has been offered a role as well.
