Howard The Duck

Although it has taken some time for Marvel Television to find success, they have done so by getting out of the MCU’s way and existing in their own space. Sure there may be some slight nods to the unseen cinematic characters they co-exist with, but for the most part, these shows are successful because they build their own brand. While Netflix has been quick to cancel some of their Marvel shows in the past, Hulu is in the process of developing their own shows just as quickly.

Various reports that are coming out of the winter TCAs are confirming that Marvel Television is developing animated shows based on Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K., Tigra & Dazzler Show, and Hit-Monkey. And they will be bringing in some very funny comedians to oversee these shows. From Kevin Smith and Chelsea Handler to Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum. More on the report below.

Marvel Comics Howard the Duck #1 cover cropped

Those of you who stayed through the end of the credits for Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy will recall getting a quick look at Howard The Duck, the Marvel comic book character who’s reputation was besmudged by George Lucas’s 1986 big-screen adaptation. But, it’s thanks to Howard’s brief post-credits appearance in Guardians that the talking duck has a chance to reinvent himself for a newer audience.

A new ongoing Howard The Duck comic book series from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Joe Quinones is coming this March from Marvel Comics. The cover for Howard the Duck #1, by Joe Quinones, features the character as a private investigator on Earth, with a potted baby Groot along with other popular Marvel superheroes in the backdrop. Now, Quinones’ cover for Howard the Duck #2 has been revealed and it features Howard along with the Guardians of the Galaxy themselves doing a duck-face, selfie pose.

Check out both covers here below.

Howard the Duck

I have a complicated history with Howard the Duck.

One of the movies that is synonymous with egregious Hollywood waste and the empirical hubris of a post-Star Wars George Lucas (who produced the movie and with his longtime collaborators Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz writing it and Huyck directing – it would be his last film as a director), Howard the Duck was one of the costliest flops of the 1980s and for years was widely regarded as a bad film. With the advent of cable television and the advancements in home entertainment technology the movie began to develop a healthy cult following and its notorious reputation mostly faded over time.

Howard the Duck was also the first big-budget movie to be based on a Marvel Comics title. Twelve years passed before the next one was released: Blade.

A few weeks ago, one of our contributors talked to us about doing a piece on the 1986 LucasFilm bomb Howard The Duck. ‘Wow, Howard The Duck,’ I thought, ‘I haven’t seen that movie in years.’ and I think it’s been out of print for a long time. So, I looked it up and see that a new Special Edition is available now for pre-order with a release date of March 10, 2009 (yeah, that’s going right on the Wish List).

Next thing I know, it’s on Hulu [synchronicity!]. (Watch it here below.)

Now, I know the film was considered a bomb and an embarrassing blip in the LucasFilm Archives, but I remember enjoying it when it came out back in 1986. But, I was kid back then and at that time I devotedly followed anything with George Lucas‘ name on it, so I wondered how I’d feel about the movie now. So, on Christmas Eve night before I went to bed, I watched Howard The Duck, and you know what? I still liked it. Is it a good movie? Nope. But is it the worst movie? No way.
