Rush Hour 3

One of the reasons why Rush Hour 3 couldn’t match its predecessors on a comedic level, is because a lot of the jokes seemed like they were rehashed, dated, or just pulled from the bin of unused Rush Hour jokes. So Arthur Sarkissian would like to alleviate that problem by making Rush Hour 4.

According to him, the fourth Rush Hour will be “more gritty.” Yes, the one word that almost everyone dreads when they hear filmmakers say it, has been brought up, and it’s for a Rush Hour sequel.

Shaolin - 2011Shaolin
Netflix Streaming
DVD | Blu-Ray
Produced and Directed by Benny Chan
Starring Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, Jackie Chan, Wu Jing, Fan Bingbing, Xiaoliuna, Hung Yan-yan
Emperor Motion Pictures
Originally Released: January 19, 2011

Shaolin is an epic tale, made by Chinese and Hong Kong filmmakers – directed by Benny Chan – emphasizing both the peaceful path and jaw-dropping martial defense skills of the legendary Shaolin Monks. Featuring a supporting role from Jackie Chan, the film is a captivating ride from beginning to its conclusion – laced with numerous lessons and morals to make even the hardened of us reflect our own inner ethics.

One of the greatest aspects of Netflix Streaming is the instant accessibility users have to films made outside of the United States. I have had the pleasure of watching a wide range of films from around the world there, and while I understand some people have an aversion to subtitles, once you get past that hurdle, you open up a whole new world of experiences.

‘Karate Kid’ Sequel On the Way

The Karate Kid 2010I guess we can file this news under the “No Duh” department, but after the new The Karate Kid movie decimated all other box office competition with a $56 million opening weekend, Sony Pictures has now begun taking meetings with writers concerning a second installment.

I believe it is a simple case of dollars and cents. When a movie that costs $40 million makes $56 million the first weekend, you have a success. Of course, we haven’t even considered the overseas profits or the money that they will make from DVD sales. Love it or hate it, Sony has rebooted a successful franchise and will make even more money from this concept in the future.

The Karate Kid 2010The Karate Kid (2010)

Starring Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, Taraji P. Henson
Rated PG

The number one stupid complaint people give in the midst of this sequel/remake craze, besides the fact that they shouldn’t do them, is that too many movies from our childhood are being ruined. I never understood that logic. You like the movies you like, for whatever reason it may be. No matter how bad it is, nothing that comes after it is enough to take away whatever it was that made you like it in the first place. The franchise may be tainted, but the movies within that canon that you loved aren’t impacted. For example, if this Ghostbusters 3 movie ever gets off the ground and sucks, the first one will still be a classic.

I’ve reexamined a lot of my favorite movies from my youth lately and realized that a lot of them really aren’t that good. I liked them at the time and that has carried over to me still liking them, but usually for nostalgic reasons. I am unapologetic about it, but truth be told, they are what they are. That said, comparing a current remake to one we hold dear from back in the day doesn’t usually have a fighting chance for that very reason.

Then there’s the new The Karate Kid.

‘Eternal Sunshine’ Writer Charlie Kaufman Touched Up ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ Script

Kung Fu Panda

It would be difficult for anyone to find an odder pairing than screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and the bumbling hero in Kung Fu Panda, but according to reports, that’s a match that has occurred recently.

Apparently Kaufman was brought in by DreamWorks to pen some touch-ups to the existing script for Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, the sequel to the surprise animated hit of 2008. Kaufman’s spit-shine of the script, written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, is completely out of the realms that he usually works within.

Kaufman is best known as the writer of two of my own personal favorite movies, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He also wrote Being John Malkovich, Human Nature, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and Synecdoche, New York, which he also directed.

Watch Jackie Chan Train Jaden Smith In ‘The Karate Kid’ Trailer … Or Don’t

The Karate Kid

It’s the week of Christmas and as was assumed, the movie news is slow as slow can be. But there has been no slowing down for movie trailers and clips, and today brings the first trailer for the feared and unnecessary remake of the 1984 Ralph Macchio nostalgia-fest, The Karate Kid.

The remake stars Jaden Smith (The Day After Tomorrow), son of Will Smith, in the Daniel-san role, and Jackie Chan in the Mr. Miyagi role made famous by the late, great Pat Morita. While the premise is indeed the same, in this movie, the characters will not be; Smith is playing Dre Parker and Chan is called Mr. Han. Smith’s character and his mother (Taraji P. Henson) move to the faraway lands of China where he obviously doesn’t fit in at all. After an interaction with a young lady sees him getting a beating from a martial arts inclined boy, Chan takes him under his wing to teach him how to defend himself, citing “the only way to stop them, is to face them.”

Continue on to watch the trailer for The Karate Kid.

Kung Fu Panda & The Furious Five DVD 2-PackKung Fu Panda
Pandamonium Double Pack
Directed by John Stevenson & Mark Osborne
Starring Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan, Lucy Lui, David Cross, Ian McShane
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release date: November 09, 2008

Kung Fu Panda tells the tale of Po (Jack Black), the son of a noodle maker who somehow becomes the sacred Dragon Warrior. In order to defeat an unspeakably evil foe, Tai Lung (Ian McShane), Po has to learn the art of kung fu and gain the respect of Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) and the Furious Five: Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Crane (David Cross), Monkey (Jackie Chan), and Viper (Lucy Lui).

When Kung Fu Panda first showed up, most people just assumed that it was another “just thrown together” animated flick for kids with Jack Black as a panda. Fortunately, the movie ended up surprising a whole lot of people and made a killing at the box office. Many considered it to be the best animated movie from DreamWorks Animation since Shrek.

I can admit that I was one of those people who thought it would suck and I too ate my words.

Any fan of Kung Fu movies is well aware of the fighting styles preying mantis or even the crouching tiger, but I am sure few have heard of the awesome fighting style known as the Kung Fu Panda. Luckily for us, the folks at Dreamworks have decided to make this lost art form as the subject of the latest movie, Kung Fu Panda.

Conversations with GoD: ‘The Forbidden Kingdom’ Screenwriter John Fusco

Ryan Midnight   |

John Fusco‘s latest screenplay to hit the big screen and about to be released on DVD this Tuesday is The Forbidden Kingdom, which will be remembered for the first on-screen appearance of both Jet Li and Jackie Chan. Fusco was the pen behind the Young Guns films, as well as the Viggo Mortensen flick Hidalgo, and he also scripted the Weinstein Company’s upcoming re-imagining of Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai.

Geeks Of Doom: Were you aware of the Chan and Li team-up when you began writing the script?

John Fusco: It actually began as a bedtime story for my young son who was beginning martial arts. Because I have a background in kung fu, I wanted to introduce him to what I felt was the right foundation: the philosophy and literature and mythology that informs the practice. If I had tried reading Lao Tzu or the Four Classics to him I would have lost him. So I made up a fun time travel journey that would be something of a primer.

While I was out in the desert with Casey Silver making Hidalgo I told him about this story I was making up for my kid and why. He felt that I was onto a movie and he encouraged me — and hired me — to start the screenplay.
