| ‘Jurassic Park’ To Be Re-Released In 3D In July 2013 |

Still one of the greatest of the modern Hollywood blockbusters, Steven Spielberg‘s original Jurassic Park is returning to theaters next summer not long after the 20th anniversary of its spectacular theatrical release. This time, however, audiences will have the chance to see the movie in glorious (hopefully) post-converted 3D. According to producer Kathleen Kennedy, the director and his longtime cinematographer Janusz Kaminski will be personally supervising the 3D conversion and conducting a frame-by-frame evaluation of the film to see that the process is done right. It’s a shame that Dean Cundey, the director of photography on Jurassic Park, won’t be involved in the project but at least the personal involvement of Spielberg and Kaminski (who shot the 1997 Jurassic Park sequel The Lost World) guarantees that this conversion won’t be a sloppy, fly-by-night effort on the part of Universal Pictures to milk the franchise dry.

| Holiday Geek Gift Guide 2011: DVDs & Blu-rays |
 |

I was about to start out this gift guide by writing some pretentious crap about the unifying power of cinema and television and how the greatest art form of the past century would make the perfect Christmas gift for that demanding loved one of yours, but then I put down the cough syrup and slapped some sense into myself. But it is true that when you’re not sure what to buy someone as a present you can always surprise them with a fine movie or a boxed set of their favorite television series. That’s why we here at Geeks of Doom want to aid you in your soul-destroying quest to find that ideal DVD or Blu-ray if you’ve got the extra dough (and you drink silver chalices full of orphan tears), for that special someone in your life.

When attempting to look critically at a piece of cinema like the Jurassic Park franchise, particularly the feature that started it off, a person from this writer’s generation must not only judge the features on singular scales of quality, but must also get past one huge roadblock: nostalgia. I don’t know how many people who will read this are in a similar boat, but the Jurassic Park franchise is one of the first true-blue cinematic experience of this generation. Coming out in 1993, Jurassic Park played as the first real memorable cinematic experience for this generation, imprinting an eye of grandeur and spectacle on a group of people, so much so that the repercussions are still being felt today. Hell, it’s also a genuinely fantastic feature film.
