Fable Fortune Kickstarter

A few months back now the gaming world was shocked by the news that Microsoft had decided to close down the game studio behind the beloved Fable franchise, Lionhead Studios, and cancel the latest game in the series, Fable Legends.

But, as it turns out, Legends was not the only project that was being worked on by Lionhead. A much smaller unannounced game titled Fable Fortune was also being developed. But instead of just tossing it in the garbage, as appears to be the fate of Legends, Microsoft granted permission to those who were developing it to continue working on it under their own new studio, Flaming Fowl Studios. To gather the funds for what could be the last Fable game we see in a long time, they’re looking to fans on Kickstarter. Continue below for more info and to see their pitch video, as well as some gameplay videos.

Kickstarter Spotlight: Glow by Ray Chou

I have an addiction. Well, more than one, really. But if you take away caffeine, books, collectible toys, and music, then you’ll probably notice that I have a thing for comic books and all of the accoutrements that go along with being a comic nerd. And do you know what’s the best part of being an adult in this day and age? No, not that. No, not that either. Geez, it’s obviously the fact that fans can get in on the ground floor of up and coming comics through crowdfunding! For the record, it was in the title of this article but I’ll give you a pass since I’m excited to be able to introduce you to this Kickstarter Spotlight for Glow #1! See, if I ramble on long enough there’s usually a point to be made.

But seriously, this project comes to us from the leaders of the group that has continually kicked ass with their Skies of Fire series, all of which were funded through Kickstarter, too! I think I may have mentioned them a time or two, like here, here, and also here. But with this new comic, they’ve taken an entirely new direction. Focusing in on a pair of siblings, this adventure will explore not only a futuristic world where technology and magic have coexisted but they’ve gone so far as to give it its own language. Prominently featured within the art, this extra feature allows the team to tell stories inside of their primary tale, drawing the reader deeper into the world of Glow.

Game Review: Tak: A Beautiful Game

Tak: A Beautiful Game

Tak is an “abstract strategy” board game in the traditions of Chess and Go, based on a fictional game mentioned in Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller Chronicle novel series. It was developed by James Ernest and Rothfuss for Cheapass Games, and is right now enjoying the home stretch of a massively successful Kickstarter campaign.

It should come as no surprise that the game surpassed its $50,000 funding goal almost instantly, currently topping off at more than ten times that number. A legion of loyal fans clamors for anything even peripherally related to Rothfuss’s epic fantasy saga about a multi-talented liar who falls backwards into legend status on the road to avenging his family’s murder.

The Creators Volume One By Michael S Bracco Kickstarter Cover

If you have not heard of Michael S. Bracco, you are certainly in for a treat! Previously having published such titles as Novo and Adam Wreck through Alterna Comics, I only discovered Bracco’s work about two years ago while reviewing the first chapter of his web series, The Creators. I was amazed at the quality of storytelling and illustrations that this comics creator was offering – for free – online, and surprised that no publisher had yet snatched his series up.

Check out the synopsis and interview with Bracco below.

Black Suit of Death

It takes more than skill and money to create a comic book. It takes passion and persistence, most likely in equal amounts. That’s exactly what the creators behind Black Suit Of Death The Series – Issue #1 have going for them. It’s a story with a science fiction background but shrouded in the mysteries of the ancient world. For this story is no less than the origin of the Grim Reaper!

Without spoiling anything, the story is as follows: thousands of years ago, a distant planet suffered from overpopulation. A scientist is therefore tasked with solving the energy crisis. Building a biomechanical suit that takes the life force of the unworthy and sends it into the planet to sustain the occupants, the scientist is denounced and exiled with his creation to the primitive planet of Earth. Passing from one bearer to the next for millennia, a new mythos of death is born: The Grim Reaper. Who will be the next recipient and what will they do with it? Well, that’s the point of this comic and Kickstarter campaign!

Kickstarter Spotlight: ‘Mech: Age Of Steel’ From Ragnarok Publications

Mech: Age Of Steel Cover

A few years back I interviewed a self-published author by the name of Rob J. Hayes over at SF Signal. Shortly after the interview, Hayes’ series was picked up and published by Ragnarok Publications, a genre fiction publisher that I hadn’t really heard too much about. I began looking into them a bit, and what I found really impressed me. These folks have been putting out some amazing work in the realm of science fiction and fantasy.

Aside from the regular selection of published novels, Ragnarok has used Kickstarter to release some fantastic anthologies (Blackguards: Tales of Assassins, Mercenaries, and Rogues; Genius Loci: Tales of the Spirit of Place) and, most notably, Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters. Almost doubling their intended goal of $10,000, Ragnarok knew they needed to eventually release a companion anthology series — an answer to their Kaiju menace. Thus, Mech: Age of Steel was born.

Kickstarter Secrets

I’m a regular supporter of campaigns on Kickstarter, as you may know. I support it financially as a backer, just like many of you do, and I try to shine a little light on many of them here at Geeks of Doom through Kickstarter Spotlight articles such as this one. But this little crowdfunding campaign is different from most.

The whole purpose of Kickstarter Secrets is to help other campaigns raise more money and create more enthusiasm with backers. As a company, Kickstarter helps fund a lot of various ideas, but many of the failed campaigns could have done better under different circumstances. And that’s what this campaign is all about!

Skies of Fire

It’s that time again, folks! I love to share these little crowdfunding campaigns with the public, especially those that involve comics! I’ve already covered the first two Kickstarters for this series, you can read them here and here, and I’m exceedingly pleased to bring your attention to this one: Skies of Fire #1-3. Self described as a dieselpunk airship story of loyalty and revenge, this one series I can get behind every time.

You can read more about it and check out its Kickstarter video below.

Kickstarter Spotlight: ‘Star,’ A Comic By Richard Clark

Star By Richard Clark Kickstarter Cover

I first met Richard Clark back in 2009 at New York Comic Con, before I even began writing for Geeks of Doom. He had a table in Artist Alley, and I was introduced to him by a close friend. I remember the incredibly detailed, beautiful artwork Clark had on display, and equally as important, I remember his personable, engaging, and fun demeanor. At the time, it didn’t seem like he had any comic book series’ of his own for purchase, but rather a plethora of commission work and writing done for major comic publishing companies, HBO, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other various institutional clients. Quite the resume! If this man had an ongoing comic at the time, I would have snatched up a copy immediately!

Well, here we are in 2016, 7 years later, and Clark is now on Kickstarter launching what looks to be a very entertaining and thought-provoking 72-page trade paperback called Star, with some awesome rewards! With only 9 days left in the campaign and a little over $1k to go toward his $10k goal, I thought it would be a great idea to have a chat with Clark about the project’s past, present, and future.

Check out the interview and video below.

Classic Edition GM Screen Kickstarter Spotlight

It may seem that tabletop role-playing games are almost a thing of the past, but the truth is that many folks like me are finding ourselves drawn back to the familiarity of paper and dice. Be it nostalgia or maybe even just wanting to pretend to be teens again, I have seen a resurgence for old school gaming amongst my friends. Once, it was often difficult to track down supplies such as dice, books, and assorted other accessories. Now, thanks to online shopping, that is not the case.

However, finding applicable items can be difficult if you aren’t playing the newest editions. And that’s where this Kickstarter campaign for Classic Edition GM Screen comes in. Read on, if this seems like your cup of tea.
