Last we heard, a remake of the the classic South Korean film, Oldboy, was on the way with Steven Spielberg directing and Will Smith starring. This sounded like an April Fools joke at first, and thankfully things never came together to the delight of many fans.

Now another potentially true April Fools–sounding bit of news has come to surface. According to Twitch, Mandate Pictures still plans on remaking Oldboy, and they’re now in negotiations with Spike Lee to direct it. Lee, of course, is best known for films like Malcolm X, Inside Man, and Miracle at St. Anna.

Mass Effect

Legendary Pictures has secured the rights to turn the incredible science fiction video game Mass Effect into a feature-length movie. The banner has previously delivered us great titles like 300, The Dark Knight, Watchmen, The Hangover, and Where the Wild Things Are…among many others.

Avi Arad and Ari Arad will produce the film, and Mark Protosevich is currently in talks to pen the screenplay. Protosevich has previously written The Cell, Poseidon, I Am Legend, and helped to write Marvel Studios’ Thor.

OldboyAfter the shocking news that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith might be making an American remake to cult Hong Kong classic Oldboy, the Internet was buzzing. But now comes buzz-killing news that I Am Legend and Poseidon writer Mark Protosevich will be writing the script, and people aren’t so thrilled.

Though it is Steven Spielberg and it could still be awesome, we all know what a bad script can do — even with such a legendary directory.

Let’s take a look at Protosevich’s track record. The Cell: eh, trippy and f’d up, but that’s about all. Poseidon: not the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but not good either; oh, and it’s a remake of a classic. I Am Legend: one of the worst movies I saw last year; again, a remake of sorts. Thor: still a while before we’ll see this one, if ever… which means questions begin to arise here as well.

When Marvel announced its plans for future movies, it wasn’t a big surprise to see Thor on the list. One of the original Avengers obviously made Thor a ripe choice for cinematic adaptation, so with writers and producers on board, all the movie needs now is a director.

Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust) had previously been attached to direct the flick, but was off the project after his holding deal expired this past December. But news out of IESB is suggesting that Eagle Eye helmer DJ Caruso might be up for the directorship.

IESB brought up the now-stereotypical question posed to directors these days, as to whether they would like to direct a superhero movie. Apparently Caruso was a fan of Thor when he was younger, and despite fears about which Thor story to tell, Caruso said he could see himself getting into directing the movie.

IESB: Have there been any talks with Marvel?
DJ Caruso: I have had some talks with Marvel about it but I have not seen a screenplay. It could be something that I am interested in.
