| Exclusive: First Look At 5 Upcoming Dark Horse Comics Covers |
|
Dark Horse Comics has provided Geeks of Doom with an exclusive first look at four amazing covers that are set to be released in the month of December, and one coming in February. In these comics is House of Fun (one-shot) a comic that I’ve been looking forward to for some time now, from Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dwyer. Collected in this one-shot are several entries from the House of Fun run in Dark Horse Presents including new Milk and Cheese comics and some of the most hilarious comic strips that have ever been printed. Also listed below are the comics for Michael Avon Oeming‘s The Victories #5, John Ostrander‘s Star Wars mini-series Agent of the Empire: Hard Targets #3 (of 5), the final issue of Tom Morello‘s Orchid, and the cover to the new Trigun Omnibus, which is set for February. Each one of these covers is great, and based on what I’ve previously read and the creators attached, these are all great picks for December, so make sure to get your pre-order sheets ready, because you won’t want to miss any of these comics.

Orchid #2
Written by Tom Morello
Art by Scott Hepburn
Colors by Dan Jackson
Letters by Nate Piekos of Blambot
Cover by Massimo Carnevale
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: November 9, 2011
Cover Price: $3.50 Orchid #2 appears to reiterate a bit of the information that we learned in the first issue, but goes a bit deeper into the background of why things are the way they are. Writer Tom Morello obviously has a grander vision than I first imagined. I find myself interested in the history of this future Earth. Hopefully more on that front as the series progresses. We find Orchid in the slave pits this issue, still resigned to her fate. With her younger brother in tow, she tries to avoid Simon as he rants like a madman. Simon, though, has other plans. Plotting an escape, he manages to arrange their sale to a wealthy buyer. Once started, they cannot turn back no matter how dangerous things get. A surprise twist at the end involving the Mask of General China sets up the next issue quite nicely.

Orchid #1
Written by Tom Morello
Art by Scott Hepburn
Colors by Dan Jackson
Cover by Massimo Carnevale
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: October 12, 2011
Cover Price: $1.00 In all honesty, I asked to review this mainly because it was written by Tom Morello, of Audioslave and Rage Against The Machine (one of my favorite bands ever) fame. I went in with an open mind and I truly expected something slightly strange…I was not disappointed. Orchid #1 is a glimpse into a future to which none of us wish to bear witness. Orchid is the story of a world after the sea has risen and changed the topography of the land. The wealthy live up high while the poor are forced in dirty villages and live as slaves to the folks in charge. Nature has kicked evolution into overdrive and there some scary creatures living in the forests surrounding each town. We get to see some of the rebels who want to change the way things are but are both out manned and outgunned at every turn. One of them escapes the clutches of the authority only to find himself hiding with the family of Orchid, a local prostitute who also has a healthy sized rebellious streak. It all wraps up with them being carted off to be sold as slaves.

| Watch The Trailer For Guitarist Tom Morello’s Comic Book ‘Orchid’Musician and activist Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave fame has turned his incredibly talented mind to the comic book page where he is telling the story of Orchid. According to the Dark Horse Comics solicitation, Orchid is “a tale about a teenaged prostitute that who learns that she is more than the role society has imposed upon her.” The rest of the solicitation goes on to build a little bit more of the dystopian future world in which Orchid takes place. It sounds like a really cool concept, and if anybody should be telling this story, Morello is that person.
