Well, I’m guessing that large parts of the country this week are going to have problems getting to their comic shops this week thanks to the joys of winter. Remember, the comics will still be there later, so if you need to wait to pick up your comics this week, that’s okay. You can just sit back and read about the comics you will buy once you can leave the house — or, gave the digital editions for those available in that format. Dynamite Entertainment has truly gotten the gang back together, and in doing so, we get just about every single kind of Red Sonja story that there is right here in this single comic. In this giant issue, you get sword and sorcery, horror, action, and even a little heartwarming drama. What’s not to love?

Consisting of five different stories, by legendary Red Sonja writers like Eric Trautmann, Roy Thomas, Michael Avon Oeming, Gail Simone, and Luke Lieberman, you get everything you want and more in this comic book. Roy Thomas pens a truly great old fashioned sword and sorcery tale with a hint of mystery. Current Red Sonja scribe Gail Simone writes a very entertaining story about Red Sonja finally meeting her childhood “idol.” Then there’s Luke Lieberman’s (Queen Sonja) story about Sonja, a companion, and a sorcerer that is thrilling, yet very heartwarming. Out of all five stories, there’s not a bad one in the bunch.

Lil Sonja #1 is not only enjoyable for people who read the regular title, but it’s the PERFECT gateway for younger readers (both girls AND boys) to be introduced to the character. There’s only problem….

Writer Jim Zub pulls off a writing assignment that I can only assume was pretty daunting. Turn the She-Devil with a Sword into a playful little girl that goes on adventures. While clothed. Thankfully, he pulls it off quite successfully, all the while not dumbing down the character to make it unreadable for guys like me who’ve been reading Red Sonja since the early 1980s. It really is a classic “kid’s comic” like the old Harvey comics that could be read and enjoyed by both children AND their parents.

Who doesn’t love a big crossover? Well, lots of people I guess, but just because some comic events don’t live up to the hype, it doesn’t stop us from buying them for whatever reason, which is good news for Marvel Comics as they launch yet another big old hootenanny of a comic. But, if you don’t like you comics on a big scale, there’s plenty else out there for you this week, including another Marvel series that doesn’t have time for your fancy crossover. Oh, and I guess there’s a new issue of Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga. But you’re probably buying that anyway. And Gail Simone’s next installment of Red Sonja. So, let’s shoot for the stars in an absolutely cosmic edition of The GoD List!
