SINGLE ISSUES

American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #1

Henchman21 Okay. So let’s start with American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #1, written by Scott Snyder with art by Sean Murphy. I just read the Hellblazer: City of Demons trade, which also had art by Sean Murphy, so my anticipation for the art is at a fever pitch.
MK2FAC3: Oh absolutely. Sean Murphy’s recent work on Joe the Barbarian absolutely blew me away. It was the highlight of the series! …and I’m a huge Morrison fan
Henchman21: And if you liked that, you should check out that City of Demons trade or his spectacular self published work OFF ROAD which was re-released by Oni a couple of months ago.
Henchman21: And as much as I love American Vampire and Scott Snyder’s writing, I just cannot wait to see what Murphy does in this universe.
MK2FAC3: Oh absolutely, it’s going to be amazing, I’m sure.
MK2FAC3: He’s got a lot of talent, and the world of America Vampire is going to be a playground for Murphy’s mind.

Apparently, I took all the comics that MK2Fac3 wanted to talk about this week, which I can’t be held responsible for, so you fine readers will get an extra helping of my suggestions. I hope you enjoy.

ISSUES

Criminal: Last of the Innocent #1 (Marvel/Icon – $3.99): I’m very excited that Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips‘ Criminal is back with a new story. Criminal is consistently one of the best books on the market and it’s a shame that more people don’t give this book a shot. Every story arc is a self-contained story, but Brubaker also has created a universe where all of the stories exist and long-term readers are rewarded with Easter Eggs showing how the stories are connected. The art by Sean Phillips sets the perfect mood for this series and always impresses. If you’ve been reading Brubaker and Phillips’ Incognito but haven’t been reading Criminal, it’s time to jump on board. And if you haven’t been reading Criminal or Incognito, well then you have a lot of reading to do.

ISSUES

There are a lot of great comics coming out this week, as usual, with some titles like Butcher Baker: The Righteous Maker, The Tattered Man one-shot from Palmiotti and Gray, The Mighty Thor, the flawless Snyder/JOCK Detective Comics, and a Strange Adventures anthology that features some of Vertigo’s best talent, but listed here below are some of the books I’m most interested in.

The Amory Wars: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 #11 (Boom! Studios – $3.99): In its penultimate issue, the story inspired by Coheed and Cambria’s second full-length album comes to a head as the final chapter of this epic sci-fi adventure written by Coheed singer Claudio Sanchez and Peter David. The title centers around the growth of a young man into his role as the savior of the universe, and these last few issues will certainly set up the next exciting chapter of this incredible story. I’ve enjoyed every aspect of this series, and my excitement has reached its pinnacle. It’s a bit of a long mini-series, and there was an artist change, but so much happens in this book, and the difference between Burnham and Kuder is minimal, and in my opinion, worked out for the better on The Amory Wars. This is a personal favorite of mine, and I simply can’t wait to see how it all turns out.

Well, it’s an interesting week for me comics wise, I have a lot of collections that I want to tell you about, and about three single issues, all of which are first issues and each is from a miniseries! And, of course… Batman is represented in my section. Let’s kick it off with…

Drums #1 (Image Comics – $2.99): I seriously know nothing about this book, but it just looks really cool and supernatural. Based on its solicitation, I could say that the book centers around Santeria, more commonly know as “voodoo,” and raising of the dead, and that’s honestly good enough for me, but it also says that it takes place to the sound of drums. Now, I don’t know how they’re going to pull that off, but it’s got my attention. Pick this up if you want to try something new and different.

Last Mortal #1 (Image Comics – $3.99): Continuing the string of “I don’t what the F%$* this is, but it looks cool” is Last Mortal, which appears to be one of those great minis where it’s a super depressing, yet uplifting tale of real life, and I’m sure that this will get a lot of praise by the end of the year, so now’s not the time to sleep on this title.

Sorry guys and gals, it’s an all DC week for me with an emphasis on Bat this week. I try really hard to bring in indie books for this feature, and if you want that make sure to check out Northlanders, but sometimes it just has to be Gotham. So, if you don’t like Batman, a.) what’s wrong with you? and b.) skip down to Henchman’s Marvel love fest!

ISSUES

Batgirl #21 (DC Comics – $2.99): Batgirl is a phenomenon. It consistently hits on all cylinders, so there’s nothing not to look forward to. For 21 issues, Bryan Q. Miller has not disappointed with his scripts on this book, and while I did not prefer the artist on the past couple of issues, the story has been strong, cute, funny, and action packed. And this issue, and I know this for sure because I’ve seen the previews, features the return of the amazing Dustin Nguyen to the title, and his work on the title is breathtaking. I mean, the cover shown here is probably going to be my cover of the year. I’m really looking forward to this issue, and don’t be surprised when I have the next few issues of my pull list, as well. Deal with it. Or buy the issues!
