Dark Universe title card

This weekend, Universal will launch the start of their brand new Dark Universe monsters franchise with a reboot of The Mummy. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, the film will bring together some of our favorite classic monsters in an all new shared universe involving Universal Monsters. It will be followed up by the Bill Condon-directed Bride of Frankenstein, starring Javier Bardem; Creature of the Black Lagoon from screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Will Beall; The Invisible Man, starring Johnny Depp; and Van Helsing, from Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts, Arrival writer Eric Heisserer, and Dan Mazeau.

But that is just the beginning. Because Kurtzman says there are more Dark Universe films on the way. In a new interview, the man responsible for building this new Universal Monsters shared universe says Dracula, Frankenstein, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Phantom of the Opera are being developed. More on the story below.

“If I am the Phantom, it is because man’s hatred has made me so. If I shall be saved, it will be because your love redeems me.”

An adaptation of the 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux, 1925’s The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most lavish spectacles of the silent era. Directed by Rupert Julian (The Cat Creeps), the film stars Lon Chaney (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) as the Phantom, a deformed performer who haunts the Paris Opera House.

Leroux’s novel has inspired countless adaptations. There’s Universal’s 1943 film with Claude Rains and Susanna Foster; Hammer’s 1962 production with Herbert Lom and Heather Sears; and Brian De Palma’s spirited 1974 horror-musical, The Phantom of the Paradise. Hell, there’s even a 1989 version starring Robert Englund as the Phantom! Of course, the adaptation most people are familiar with these days is Joel Schumacher’s 2004 film, an adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum.

In the movie, an aspiring opera singer finds herself transported back to Victorian-era London – and into the arms of a reclusive, disfigured maestro determined to make her a star. The silver-throated Christine (Jill Schoelen, The Stepfather) enjoys success through the arrangements of her new lover (Englund) until she realizes that he has been committing unspeakably grisly murders in her honor. Now The Phantom won’t stop until he’s completed his masterpiece in blood!
