Brandon Routh as The Atom

So what The CW is telling me is that I have to quit my day job and become a professional television viewer, because they are once again planning on giving me an awesome Arrow spinoff. Ok, Arrow to The Flash to Atom (?) spinoff.

Deadline reports that a potential new series would team Arrow stars Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/The Atom and Caity Lotz with The Flash stars Victor Garber as Martin Stein and Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold. Also hinted are three new DC characters not yet seen in the ever-expanding DC television superhero world. There is no title yet for the series, which is in development and is rumored to be a mid-season replacement next year.

Argo

Ben Affleck‘s remarkable transformation from talk show punchline to acclaimed filmmaker is one of the most remarkable Hollywood comeback stories of recent years. After starting out in 2007 with the excellent Dennie Lehane adaptation Gone Baby Gone and following that up three years later with the hit crime drama The Town, Affleck has returned with his most ambitious directorial effort yet, the true-life drama Argo.

Today Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Argo. You can watch it here below.

The film is based on the true story of “the Canadian Caper,” an unusual operation undertaken by the CIA in 1979 to rescue six American diplomats who evaded capture after the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was seized by Iranian revolutionaries.

Kung Fu Panda

Last week we found out that Gary Oldman would be joining the cast of Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom. Now DreamWorks Animation has revealed the names of some other actors who’ve joined the cast of the sequel to the 2008 hit, Kung Fu Panda.

Most interesting of them all is the addition of the man, the myth, the legend, Jean-Claude Van Damme. The action star has been pretty much disappeared off the Hollywood radar aside for the role as himself in JCVD and a couple of returns to his Universal Soldier role.

Green Lantern: First Flight
Single-Disc Edition
Directed by Lauren Montgomery
Starring Christopher Meloni, Victor Garber, Tricia Helfer
DC Animation/Warner Brothers
Released: July 28, 2009

DC Animation has hit on something with their recent direct-to-DVD releases, particularly the Batman: Gotham Knight and Justice League: The New Frontier movies and the streak continues with their newest film, Green Lantern: First Flight. DC/Warner Bros picked a good time to release this, what with the Green Lantern comic series being the best it’s been, arguably ever, and big news being thrown around with Ryan Reynolds being cast as Hal Jordan in the upcoming live-action movie. Let’s be honest, Green Lantern has never been as big a name to the non-comics world as say Batman or Spider-Man, so it’s nice to see that DC hasn’t forgotten about him. Is this movie as good as the current series? I wouldn’t say that, but it does a good job of introducing the characters and world of GL, so it succeeds in that part.

One thing to be said about the story is that it isn’t a straight adaptation of a story already told in comics, ala Superman: Doomsday or New Frontier. It’s a completely new story, although it does borrow elements from the entire series, and specifically some elements from the Sinestro Corp War.
