The Avengers

Back in May, Disney confirmed that Marvel Studios already had a sequel to The Avengers in development. Earlier this month, it was announced that Joss Whedon would return to write and direct The Avengers 2.

Now, Walt Disney Studios has officially announced the release date for The Avengers 2, and while it’s a ways off, it’s no surprise that it’ll be another summer blockbuster for Marvel Studios.

David Cronenberg

David Cronenberg‘s films aren’t intended to make big bucks at the box office; they are intended to make bold statements. His films explore the dark nature of bodily transformations, infestation, technology, and now with Cosmopolis coming out tomorrow, economics.

Recently, the director chatted about his latest directorial effort, but gave some interestingly negative thoughts about superhero movies.

You can see the quote below.

The Last Stand

Ever since his career as governor of California came to a close Arnold Schwarzenegger has been working overtime getting his chiseled mug back into the world of action cinema. Last weekend he returned to theaters with an expanded role in The Expendables 2, but the Austrian Oak won’t be seen in a starring since making his comeback until next January when The Last Stand hits theaters.

Here’s a first look at the movie via a newly released trailer. You can check it out here below.

Schwarzenegger plays former Ray Owens, a former Los Angeles cop who has taken on the job of sheriff in a sleepy border town. When one of the biggest drug lords in the world (Eduardo Noriega) makes a spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy and heads for Owens’ town at top speed with a hostage and a gang of ruthless thugs in town the sheriff must gather his meager forces and stop the drug lord from getting across the border and evading justice forever.

Watch These Clips From The Beautifully Restored ‘Jaws’ Blu-ray Edition

Steven Spielberg‘s epic adventure Jaws was released this week for the first time on Blu-ray and I have to say, it’s awesome. If the over four hours of bonus features, including new documentaries and previously released extras (listed here below), on this Blu-ray release don’t grab you, then the frame by frame digital restoration restoration of the film definitely will, as it’s stunning. You can see the before-and-after restoration comparison stills here below.

Below are a few clips from the Blu-ray Edition of scenes from the film, and even watching them on the small screen will show you how amazing the restoration looks. There’s also a behind-the-scenes video of composer John Williams and director Steven Spielberg talking about the film’s memorable theme music, a clip from the Blu-ray documentary feature The Shark is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy of JAWS.

Lastly, if you’d like to crush it like Quint, Narragansett Beer has released a limited edition 1975 retro can, so visit www.narragansettbeer.com for more information on that.

The 10 best films of 2012 so far...

Hello Geeks, FamousMonster here. So, how many movies have you seen this year? I’ve spent the past couple of hours cataloging every film I’ve seen released in 2012, and the magic number is 60. That’s 60 movies in seven months, which means out of the 228 days of the year so far – I’ve spent five entire days watching new movies.

With four and a half months left in 2012, I think it might be a good time to figure out what my favorite movies of the year are so far. Soon we’ll be transitioning from summer’s popcorn blockbusters to fall’s dramatic, heavy-hitting films vying for Oscars and Golden Globes. There’s been a lot of fantastic films this year, some of which were huge successes with wide releases and record-breaking box office returns, while others were limited-release independent films that deserve your attention.

It’s my hope that this list of ten films balances obvious, geek-approved genre flicks with new, interesting titles that you’ll seek out and enjoy. Of course, there are still plenty of highly-anticipated films on the way – The Master, Lincoln, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Django Unchained – but until then, this list should keep you busy. OK, enough talking, let’s get on with the show. Without further adieu, here’s my list of the 10 best films of 2012 so far…
