The first trailer for Neil Blomkamp‘s Elysium has just hit the web, and it’s everything you imagined it would be. The film is a follow up to his last sci-fi indie hit District 9. Just like his last film, Elysium puts a sci-fi spin on the social issues that faces us today. Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, and more star in this gritty and fantastic looking sci-fi film.
The Geeks of Doom team saw a couple of selected scenes during last year’s San Diego Comic-Con and yesterday, Sony offered a couple of journalists a glimpse of a more polished product plus an advanced look at this trailer. Based on the looks of it, we can see there will be a clash between two very distant social classes: the rich who live in a luxurious lifestyle orbiting on the heavens, and the poor who live in the slums that cover the entire Earth.

Damon will play the hero who will attempt to bring order to the classes by breaking into the heavily guarded Elysium, which is governed by Foster’s character. For right now, the trailer sets up the premise for the film and based on the reports from those who saw the presentation yesterday, barley scratches the surface when it comes to the action portion of the film.
Although Copley wasn’t the center of attention in this trailer, we do know that he plays as an atagonist in the film. Elysium also stars Wagner Moura, and Alice Braga. The film opens in theaters on August 9.

I love District 9…instantly a major piece of sci-fi, humanistic excellence. This trailer does nothing for me. Lovely shots, great actors, a threadbare premise. Looking forward to something more titillating. And I hope that Neil Blomkampf hasn’t fallen to the sickness that ruined John Woo, Timur Bekmembatov, and other imports who get foiled by the sleazy emptiness of Hollywood. Been there, done that. Pretty much over it.
